Over the last week or so, when starting from cold, the engine wouldn't fire a immediately and I get an engine immobilser message, doors lock and the headlights come on.
Eventually the car does start on the 2 or 3rd try. Once warmed up the engine stops and starts fine. It seems excessive for just a cold engine - perhaps battery is on the way out?
I have had an airbag fault for ages which pops up on starting, but goes away if I stop and restart.
Anyone had something similar?

I have a 1.4 hdi, mine does the same and I was getting sick of it took it to local garage as it eventually started cutting out and loosing all power to it and all electrics went off. They changed battery tested it and it said it was recharging it self all was well, set off same thing went back and I have a dodgy alternator. Hope this helps mate

Thanks, I suspect the alternator as well. I'll do some voltage tests and see what I can discover.

You have a low battery voltage, drives the CAN system mad
Check the alternator charge rate & if thats ok replace the battery with a Varta OR Bosch.

this happened to me last night! i have a 2005 2.0 HDi. I got in and it took a good 3-4 seconds for it the start up and then the air bag light popped up. So i drove to work thinking what it could be. and when i got back in the car this morning it still took 3-4 seconds to fire up but the airbag light had gone. i guess we have the same problem?? If you sort it out, please please let me know what you did!

Your car looks 6 years old, its most likely still on the factory fitted Varta original, how long do you think a battery lasts

There should be a date when the battery was made marked on the battery, either a sticker OR stamped in to the casing.
Normally a week number & a year.
Varta make the best car batteries OR get a Bosch if its cheaper, Varta make the batteries for Bosch
Varta make a lot of OE batteries that are fitted by a lot of car manufacturers on the production line.

Always pays to get a decent battery when you need to replace it, top end Varta & Bosch batteries come with a 5 year warranty

cant really fork out for a Varta right now so i guess a Bosch is next best! Should i go to my local garage and ask for a Bosch to be put in? Or will they say "do one" lol last time they put in a "Banner Bull" battery.

You will most likely pay around the same for a Bosch as a Varta, there exactly the same battery made in the same Varta factory but with a different sticker.
Go down / ring your local motor factor ( NOT Halfords ) & price up a new battery.
