I've heard about issues with a rattling manifold on the GTi but I'm not clear on what the problem is.
I did a few searches on here and google and this is the best I came up with, Link.
Its annoying as it only started the other day. 30mph or cruising its fine but put my foot down a bit and its tap-tap-tap-tap....

So what is causing it and how do / how much is a fix?

Laughing
I answered my own question, in the article was this link

Still any idea on cost?

I have the same problem, i was told by someone who is very experienced with gti 180's that it is the heat shield above the manifold rattling on the body work. You can just see the top of it if you look down the back of the engine.
PM gti180boy for more info.

Hope this helps.

I know of the heat shield issue, but this is different.

Got exactly the same problem with mine, but the exhaust makes it hard to hear it. Only really audible around 2300-3000rpm then it sort of goes away. But it is like a faint tapping noise

not the greatest of pics but i got mine done. it wasnt rattling but heard it was a common problem and while the mani is off best to get it sorted

oh yeh and cost, nothing for me as i know someone who works in a fab shop but its a 5 min job and would cost you £10 max to get done, only issue is having the mani in front of you in the first place

That was my main problem when the next exhaust was fitted- it is really hard to get to whilst on the car: read: nigh on impossible: and its a b***h to remove from the car too.

I should imagine with a bit of patience it can be done on the car but it is pretty tight up there

GTi180s don't have the manifold rattle. They have the manifold heat shield rattle. The GTi138 has the manifold rattle internally. The 180s manifold is different. It's a 4 into 1, unlike the 138.

I also have the same buzzing noise on my 138 as soon as i hit 3000rpm.
It's annoying, but i can live with it for now. She is due her yearly service at the end of the month, so hopefuly i will get it sorted then.

Problem solved!

The olive clamp that holds the Cat to the manifold was only half on!

Replaced it with a new one and is now silent!

I have a 206 GTI 138bhp it has what i thought sounded like a tappet rattle when under load but not when you just rev the engine.

I thought it might be low on oil because i had a astra 2.2SRI that was a company car that i regularly let run low on oil and it started to tap. It sounds similar to that but its now low on oil at all.

Cam belt is being changed this week so im thinking of getting this done at the same time do you think thats what the noise is?

Don\'t fooled by others

Have exactly the same issue, most noticeable around 2800-3000rpm, or when accelerating hard. Due a service in the next few months so will mention it to my mate who does it.
