Got a problem, as you may have guessed
I've got a 206 1.4 8v 2003, and occasionaly (usually when stood still eg, in traffic) the temperature goes wild and goes all the way into the red. At "normal" temp. it sits at 90. When the needle goes all the way into red, the fan kicks in, and after a few seconds it drops back to 90. Sometimes too the fan doesn't kick in, it just sits in the red for a while. Any ideas?

Go for a cheap fix and swap the temp sensor
Check the loom while your at it to for corrosion. But the temp gauge may be right and the car is just cooling as per normal?
If the fans arent coming in as you say, try a new sensor (cheap and easy starting point tbh)

Just checking
And dont forget to put at least 30 percent anti freeze in, so about 2.5 litres or so
And bleed it obviously

Why would a coolant change cure overheating? There may be a need to bleed it but that would be with or without new coolant?
Note that the temperature sensor to change is the blue one fitted to the top of the radiator that is the one that controls the fan. The green one in the thermostat housing is for the ecu, brown (if you have one) is for the aircon but switches the cooloing fan on at low speed and blue in the front of the head is for the dashboard guage.
Well, that is how my daughters 1.4 8V "W" plate works. Though she doesn't have the brown sensor as the car does not have aircon.
