Hi there,
I have found a 206 GTI 140bhp model.
Got 100k on clock, SP Kit, steering controls etc... But are there any common problems with them I should be looking out for which can lower the value of these etc... and not cheap to repair? Or repairs which aint visible unless you really look for them?
Also, why do they seem not to hold their value well? Also, are they tune-able well? And what would they be like to a 106 GTI?
I'm looking for a fastish cheap to run car atm so it seems to tick boxes as does 45mpg on motorway where I will mainly be using it on. But I like a fast car when hit the lanes etc...

Can i say one thing without sounding rude. your names sam 93 so i supposing you 18 same as me? have even tried getting isured on a 206 gti 140 model? Ive got a 2.0 litre hdi 90 bhp model and mate I'm paying 3000 for that LMAO

Nah buddy, I'm 19... My insurance is just a tad over a grand Had a Golf GTI mk3 16v before this and currently have a BMW which I pay 1100 on.
Haggling with Admiral always pays off

i've had mine for just under 2 years and done roughly 10k miles in it and it's NEVER had a problem, other than wheel bearings needing replacing, and a few lil things like new pads and tyres. there really reliable motors (well mine has been anyways)
as to why they dont hold there value, i have no idea. i paid 3k for mine just tried selling it for 1,500 with years mot, 6 months tax and a new cambelt and waterpump and not a single person phoned the whole time i had it advertised lol.
only thing i can think of is the price to insure them perhaps puts people off?

I had a gti138 for nearly 4 years and didn't have any problems other than usual wear and tear stuff

deebee dont forget insurance goes a lot on postcode aswell as if you add named drivers it may drop some aswell as if you have no claims and where it stays overnight and so on....
as for sam93 my personal opinion if your looking to get 45mpg i would look elsewhere ive never seen mine get above 30 but mine is a 180 i also wouldnt go for one with 100k on the clock either but that might just be me.
they dont hold value cause of the cost to tax insure and run the things and nearly everyone these days is looking for cheap to run cars, not very well tuneable due to being N/A but if your wanting the mpg you wouldnt want to tune as your gonna lose it the faster you get the car anwyay?
i would hope its recently had a cambelt and water pump doen maybe even a second time with those sort of miles and as for stuff to look out for i cant really say as i aint had any problems with mine

yeah you would definitely need to make sure it's had a fairly recent cambelt and waterpump change if you was going to get it with 100k on the clocks.
other than that it should be fine.

Ive had mine for a year now and had two 306 gti6s aswell all very reliable but some are better than others. Just make sure you get one with service history. You will be lucky to get 35mpg from a 140 gti, my gti6 would do 45mpg easy on a long trip but the 206 struggles to do 35mpg.

Hmm... I was looking on the internet... Around town, they aint great. But on motorway seem pretty damn good tbh. If averages 30mpg, I would be fine
Trying to currently move closer to work lol. But I should be getting fuel allowance sorted so shouldn't be to bad
Tuneable NA is always expensive. The 106 GTI seems alright prices for NA tune ability so if similar I'm sorted. Don't want anything turbo'd at the moment, drove a turbo'd car and couldn't keep of boost, its just pulling. But if you can get an NA car to be very quick. More of an accomplishment
I will be looking for an alright car for the minute, 206 GTI just seems alright. The mileage doesn't bother me, my current car has 175k on it, and when you drive it you wouldn't think it, responsive both on the throttle and steering.
Old dear has a 206 CC with 140bhp engine, so she don't moan on fuel haha.
Aslong as it beats my Golf 250 miles to a tank of fuel! What does yours get to a tank?
They seem pretty solid engines then. I've always stayed away from French as the dreaded reliability stories, always had german and jap cars.
BMW only seems good on fuel as the tank is huge on it.

I used to get nearly 40mpg in my Gti, all lane driving to work, I average about 34mpg in the 180

Thats sweet. Average of 30mpg is all that I need About 2 gallon of fuel a day then, so £12ish a day

yeah internet isnt always a great source it depends on how you as a person drive? i personally have a heavy right foot and overtake a lot
im not sure about prices for stuff compared to the 106 GTi but i find its pretty damn expensive just to gain maybe 20bhp if your lucky? maybe the 140 engine is a bit better for gain and cheaper for parts?
I wouldnt call it an accomplishment to get it quick just spending a lot of money if im honest.....
As for the mileage i would go check the car out and test drive it see how it feels to you and if you like it go for it but as said id want service history and cambelt and water pump done recently!
She wont moan about fuel as she wont put her foot down too much i wouldnt have thought?
All the storys about unreliability are the ones that have been ragged or problem cars when bought i bought mine near as new and never had anything wrong with it! My full tank once got me 160 miles but keep in mind mines a 180 and that was a drive to wales mainly motorway and open roads....
I want to go german next myself or at least something a bit more "prestige"
At the end of the day its your choice and that but my personal opinion from what you want and what you plan on doing im not sure wether its right for you or not im swaying towards it not being......

It seems like a good money maker tbh It has FSH
The inside of the 206 GTI is more luxury than my BMW!
If get it and don't like it, swapz will be calling
Running something like a diesel is pointless due to the fact to an extra 10p extra a litre, not really worth it :/ See what its like. I can have a heavy foot, but if need to, will drive economically Used to be able to pull 35mpg out of a Golf, but that was head hurting driving, and was a right struggle, usually got 28mpg out of it driving like a nun. But yeah, I used to get tempted to open that up. but mature a bit, and if needs be I can drive economically. If I have spare money to burn, will happily change just before redline (private road at all)
