Hi guys, not long bought a 2.0 HDi, ive notaced quite a bit of black smoke coming out of the exhaust just as the turbo kicks in is this normal?

I know there's gonna be smoke with it being a derv but surely not as much as im getting?

Its hard to explain but if im cruising down the motorway at about 2k revs there's a slight hesitation before the turbo kicks in and thats when i get quite a bit of smoke out the back, not alot but its noticable!

Just wondering if anybody could shed a bit of light on this or some solutions to it?

Thanks in advance.

Could be the cat if it's still got the original one

Try running some shell v-power or the BP premium fuel through it to clean up the internals a bit

Could be CAT or signs of Turbo failure.

Was wondering about the turbo, is that the only tell tale signs of turbo failure?

Im going to get some of that derv cleaner redX stuff see if that works.

If i de-catted it, would it smoke alot then? as that was on the cards anyway

Removing the cat should make much of a difference to the amount of smoke if everything else is healthy, instead of redex i would just stick in some premium fuel as that has the same additives and its pretty good stuff

I would also check along the air intake system for leaks and make sure the air filter is half decent, and check along the piping after the turbo for leaks

Just needs a clear out. Rev it up every gear to about 3500 (or as high as you dare) and s**t loads will come out. Only when it's hot though!!

EDIT: re-read your post... not sure on the delay with the turbo though, mine doesn't do that :\

I would think it might be a split boost pipe more than anything.

Check all pipes under the bonnet

Also, while im on a roll...

When the turbo kicks in the car pulls quite badly to the left, then corrects itself when i take my foot off?

Torque steering.

You need to man up, it's not that strong on a 2.0HDi Laughing
