Hey
I've had my eye on the mk4 golf petrol for a while, but I was told that this model has known gearbox issues which costs a fair bit to replace so I was told the diesel is bettter . trouble is the TDI is rare to find and it's 1.9L minimum.
Failing that I have stumbled onto the 206 as a reasonable first car.
I'd like to hear what you guys this of this 206
With the VW I know that they can go into 150K and have no trouble, but when it comes to the 206 I'm not so sure, so I'd really appreciate some feedback on the mileage of this vehicle, and how reliable it might be.
Also if you know of any common faults I should be aware of on these 206's please feel free to share.
Thanks.

300k is achievable for a VW TDI Engine. Mines at 152k and just flew through the MOT and still pulls ridiculously well.
Wouldn't pay £800 for that tbh. Can't be great if a dealer is selling it for £840. Cause he'd probably know it'd get about £200 at auction.

All depends how you look after them. 206s can quite happily go up to megamiles. My 1.4 is on 120k and my GTi has done 134k

£840 isn't bad for that. It is a 2000 X, so any more than that would be pricey.
There are cheaper ones about though.
You usually see the 206 1.4HDI with a lot of miles on them.
I don't think the VW 1.9TDI 90BHP is too bad in insurance.... Remember, the same engine is in the Seat Leon which I think is a cheaper car to insure.

Mileage wise it should be fine if its been looked after (check service history)
Although I think it's overpriced. You can get a better and newer 206 for the same price.

I agree with the price, as long as it's serviced and looked after it will keep going. My other half 206 xs is on 115k ish and still going strong.
The other too think about is the tax on this car as it's not much more powerful than a 1.4 but it's around £220 a year to tax were as a 1.4 is only £130. But some of the diesels have super cheap tax, its worth looking into what it's going to cost

My dads is a MK4 Golf Gti 1.8T and his is on about 85K on the clock and a 52 plate and is running well still for a nearly 10 yr old car, he's had no gearbox issues or any other issues really if this is any help?
