Hi all,

I've had a problem with my car a few hours ago.

Basically, the central display (the one indicating date and time/ext. temperature) died tonight, and I was wondering if any of you had the same problem before. (I have the "old" display, the one with one line only - my car is a 02 plate).

I've checked the box with the fuses underneath the steering wheel and everything looked fine (anyway, I'll double-check them tomorrow).

If it's not the fuse, what could it be?

Thanks in advance for your help.
Paco

Yes, I have.
It was fully working when I switched the engine off, then switched it on again, after a few seconds, and it was gone. I've checked the fuses but everything was fine...

May be the bulbs died all together at the same time? Don't know...

Thanks
Paco

Put a multimeter on the bulbs to see if a current can go through it, if not you have your answer, and if a current goes through your bulb but it doesn't light up then u know it's the display,

I don't have a multimeter - I'm not that keen on this kind of things unfortunately.
Anyway, thanks for your suggestion. Wink

Thanks Tom.
I've double-checked everything again. The display works. It shows the right time, date and temp even after switching the engine on and off and removing the key, but it is not lit up.

I think the small bulbs on the back of the display died. As iainlovatt said I should check them with a multimeter now, but I dont have one. Sad

I might ask one the garages around here if they can check it for me, or just check if the bulbs are gone or still working...

Any suggestions? Do you think the display still working or it's just the bulbs?
I know any guess couldn't be right without checking it first, but what do you think?

Thanks,
Paco

The bulbs are on a separate small circuit board inside the display and the contacts on the circuit board can become deteriorated and then you have digits display but no illumination. You can clean up the contacts with a pencil eraser or even better with electrical contact cleaner spray if you have it

It really is best to use a multimeter and check for circuit as you can test it has a circuit there through the bulbs before reinstalling. Buy a cheap one and teach yourself how to use it and then there'll be no stopping you Very Happy

Hi guys, just wanted to let you know that I managed to fix the problem.

It took me a while (I'm not that good with these things) Smile but I managed to get the display fixed.
The bulbs actually died (I have no clue how and why this happened, but it happened) and luckily everything's fixed now (I spent only £2.40 for 3 new 1.2V bulbs).

Thanks everyone,
Paco Wink
