Basically as ive been doing insurance quotes today my car keeps coming up as a 16v i didnt really know as when i looked at the car 8v or 16v wasnt advertised ... which i think it may be 16v .. ive found my car to be sort of sluggish .. i know the 1.1 engine and the 1.4 engine are the same looking in the 8v category and the 16v has got a nice big cover and was wondering that maybe someone has had a front ender in it or blew the engine at some stage and either chucked a 1.1 in there or a 1.4 8v .. is there any easy ways to tell which is what the engine. isnt a great runner anyway but still would like to know .. cheers guys .. may sound stupid but its hard to tell for me atm

The 8 valve engines have a sort of oblong silver rocker cover on them, the 16v's normally have a big plastic cover over the top.
Don't argue the opinions of idiots.
They will bring you down to their level and win through experience.

What are the first 8 digits of your VIN? That will have the engine codename for whatever it left the factory with, and I doubt someone would go to the effort of changing the ECU and loom to put an 8v in what was a 16v

Also, have a look at the casting number imprinted on the cylinder head just to the right of the exhaust manifold

There you go, have you had it fault code read to see why it isn't running so well?

I had mine done and the amount of things that come up even if the engline management light hasn't flashed...

Edit: have a look at the V5 document, see what its been registered as. there's most likely a mistake somewhere along the lines

cheers for that lee really appreciate it ... not yet its booked in next week , its very sluggish .. i mean i dont expect it to be amazing as its an 8 valver and a 1.4 ... but you know atleast a bit of kick in the engine. sometimes it can start up and it will drop revs and just stay there and i can slam my foot on the accelerator and it wont move, definately something wrong there , someone i spoke to thinks it may even be an ecu update ... i can go down the motorway hit 70 .. and foot to the floor its not moving its as if its deccelerating and the speeds just dropping ... very slow off the mark aswell
