Hi All,
I've done a little research into this, but wanted to get the opinions from the 206 specialists, you guys.
My temp gauge is going up 2 thurds or 3 quarters of the way when the engine is idle.
Based on previous research, please are saying the following:
- Could be a bad thermostat
- Fan might not be working.
- Problem with fan belt
- Obvious questions about leaking coolant or low coolant levels.
I am thinking the problem is with the fan. Why? Because I had to get a brand new ECU when a detailer stupidly sprayed high pressure water under the hood.
Based on all your opinions, does this sound right, or are there other possible issues? My guess is that whoever installed the new ECU did not correctly wire up the fan.
What doens't make sense though is that I've been driving the car with a new ECU for 3 weeks and this is the first time I've noticed this. It only happened this morning. I'm at work so had no time to check the fan before posting this msg.
To be honest, I'm a bit of a noob with what's under the hood of my car, but I'm doing the research and learning. So I'm not sure where the fan actually is.
ANOTHER ISSUE:
I also found today that my car didn't start well in the morning. I had to crank it 4 times and push the accelerator to the floor to get it started. Could there be any relation to the above temperature issue?

Check your earth straps first, ive had an issue with my temp gauge doing as it liked turned out to be a loose earth cable.

Petrol engines do warm up when on idle, diesel engines cool down while on idle, its just how it is.
your fan should kick in just over half way on the temp gauge, if not.. it could just be a faulty fan relay.

Ok thanks. I'll have the mechanic look at it. Also, could this be bad if I leave it? I'll have to wait till the weekend (It's currently Monday here in Sydney). I drive to work in stop start traffic all the time, so my engine will be idle quite often.
If driving it and having it heat up on and off for 5 - days is bad for the engine, I may have to just take a day off from work to visit the mechanic.
Also, for the other part of my question... is there any way this could be related to starter issues? I couldn't possibly see how it could, but I don't know.

Just make sure your coolant is constantly topped up. So long as the car doesn't overheat for any longer period than necessary you won't cause any permanent damage. By overheat, I mean that your 'STOP' lamp is lit on the cluster display.
If you find that it's getting dangerously close to overheating (temperature needle is just below the red), put your internal fans on full and your heater on max, directed into the cabin to help release some of the hot air which should help enormously.
You could probably check most things yourself, you just need to take the bumper off.
1. Check the thermostat operation - feel the pipes too and from the radiator, both should be hot
2. Check the fan isn't seized - e.g. you can turn it by hand
3. Check the relay connections wiring, for corrosion (Most common fault for the fan not working)
The car not starting up correctly, is not likely to be a connected issue.

I remember the original story at the start with this.
There is no fan-belt, the fan motor relays are controlled by the ECU and this can be a very serious issue.
Pressing the accelerator to get it to start is totaly unacceptable.
Temp gauge should never go above 100ºC even in the hottest climate conditions.
Take it straight-back making a massive row and tell them unless they make it reliable you will not be happy and will keep pestering them.
I think you've been very patient and reasonable, so you're fully entitled to a permanent solution with the car.
The 206 can have various problems but when it's good, it's really good.

Thanks for the advise everyone, especially V9977. I remember your assistance from my previous threads. I'll most definitely go back to them.
Just to update you all. I have realised that the issue with starting the car has only happened when my fuel is in the last eighth of the tank. Maybe this is just a coincidence, because I couldn't imagine how low fuel could cause such an issue, but it's one hell of a coincidence. Can anyone think of how low fuel in the tank could cause this? I'm not talking really low here, only in the last eighth.

Probably a dodgy fuel sensor and it's lower then you think.
Short the pins on the fan, check if it spins.
Edit: Just seen your location. It's because' 206's ain't designed to work upside down. Get a BMW. Their gloveboxes work both ways.
