This gradually got worse and worse and now it is every time I start the engine it has long starts, when the engine is off for an hour or more and I start the engine again it will have a slow start otherwise it is a quick start if I stop/start immediately?
MOT next two weeks, don't have a clue what to check in this sort of thing! I can only say nothing is wrong with battery and alternator, although this was checked 2-3 months back.

is the starter going slow or do you mean it spins over at normal speed but takes longer too fire?

Yes it takes longer to fire when the engine is making that repetitive turnover sound you know what I mean? I am using new spark plugs also which were installed some months back.

The first day I bought the car the battery was dead and the AA fitted a new one 6 months ago. Why would a battery last only 6 months when the factory battery lasted 8 years!

Because the Alt. is not charging the full charge,so with the 6 months time you had it on,even if it's new,it will lose it power each day you use it,soon it will die.

How was the battery tested?
Has the alternator been tested, if so, how? And what were the results?

14.2 was the result so the alternator is charging the battery is fine, I'm just going to have to put up with the lazy starter.

I don't think you should rely on that too greatly, as a meaningful test of the alternator. Until you've properly tested the battery and alternator, you're no further forwards. Its up to you whether you choose to replace components needlessly, or live with an issue which might lead to failure (ie one day the car doesn't start at all). I could illustrate a potential scenario (of the alternator not being able to put sufficient charge into the battery, resulting in the battery being left depleted on a previous occasion and one of its cells sulphated) but without the actual info, I'd be guessing. I'd not want to guess and for you to needlessly replace a component.

Has the car been sat for a while before this happens? Try turning the key and giving it a second or two for the fuel pressure to build then turn the key all the way. If the engine is turning over at normal speed I would say battery and alt are fine.

Sometimes when it fires the engine rumbles slightly with the revs dropping and back to idle again, the engine is constantly being used everyday. Is the 180 suppose to have semi or fully synthetic because it was topped up with fully synthetic 5w40? Or maybe just a cheap AA emergency battery....
Sometimes it has quick strong starts and sometimes sloppy and lazy, it's always different.
