It appears the lack of oil appears to be a leak of all things lol, noticed a few patches on the drive and a quick look underneath I noticed the sump was covered in oil, from just above the filter down, you could see where it had ran down the filter, just looks like its been spraying whilst driving, the back of the sump was dry, so I've wiped it clean with some rag and left it to see where the leak come from.

I've noticed since.doin that there's some more oil near the filter on the sump, and the sump plug is still dry so I'm assuming its either a loose filter, broken seal and hopefully not the sump gasket.

Is this a common problem cars a w reg Gti 137

Obviously 1st port of call drop oil change filter and new seal on sump plug, any advice on anything else it could possibly be

There is a known issue with oil leaks from behind the flywheel due to a dodgy seal on a blanking plug on the early EW10 lumps.

Then change the filter and its gasket and also check the gasket between the oil filter housing and block.

had my mate check it out, its the gasket between the oil filter and block, problem is i cant seem to find a gasket anywhere, and is it a big job to replace looks like the throttle body and inlet gotta be removed to get to the housing, so i'm assuming them gaskets will also need replacing
