Hi, need some advice please...
my 206 packed in today, started overheating while driving and upon stopping realised there was a small leak from the radiator. after adding rad sealant and water to try and limp home we realised upon starting engine that a hose had cracked too. Garage (conveniently 100yards away) replaced hose but when we started the engine water was being forced out of the water tank.
Garage explained that we have blown the head gasket? but is it the seal that needs replacing? or does the head need skiming/planing also??
I guess this is difficult to tell without seeing it etc..
But I dont understand the damage that has been done...? Is it simply the seal? or has the block been damaged that is allowing the gases to enter the cooling system?
Could I get the seal replaced and chance it? or should the block always be planed? How can I tell myself without dismantling anything? Or is that not possible?

1.9 diesel.. no turbo.. basic one! sorry.. dont know any more than that its the girlfriends and its sitting 100miles away on a patch of grass..!

that engine rarely have head gasket problem; unless there is blockage in the cooling system.

ok thanks.. do you know what could be causing the back pressure in to the cooling system?
the guy at the garage started the engine with the cap off the water resevoire and it was coughing and spluttering out badly like a geezer...! he said it was after the combustion in the engine and that the gases were leaking in to it rather than passing out normally..
We had added radiator sealant at first not knowing the extent of the broken hose problem.. is this the issue?
when he 1st tried to start it it took an awful long time to start (lack of compression he said) but he left the air filter dismantled as he needed to remove this to replace the broken pipe..
are there other factors causing the problem? is it worth trying to salvage to do you think??

collapse pipe, lime scale due to coolant expire, corrosion...etc will cause blockage in the cooling system.
to check the head gasket you need to do the compression test; also look for oil in the coolant and coolant in the oil.
206 1.9 got next to no resell value, to me it is pointless to get it fixed if the head gasket is blown.

99.9% certain in my unprofessional opinion that its not a collapsed pipe.
limescale would be visible in the water leakage on the floor? discolouration etc? there was not any other than rust coloured water leaking.. even when the broken hose REALLY let it all out..
no signs of oil leak.. oil level good and constant past few months.
could all the sealant I poured in be causing the blockage and back pressure??
will that rectify things itself?
thought - if the radiator leak was absolute minimal and the hose was the issue and therefore I didnt need the sealant - has pouring this in made the issue 10 times worse and irreversable?!!?
Im thinking there's nothing wrong with head gasket but dont understand the back pressure.. if this could be solved the car may be ok.. I just took his word on it that it was head gasket....

could be stuck thermostat...
i never use any "quick leaking fix" so i got no idea about sealant.

if stuck thermostat then the meter reading inside the car would not drop to normal and cold as the engine cooled would it?? I observed this waiting for it to cool to add sealant and water...

depends on where is the engine temperature sensor.
air bubble from the expansion tank could just be you bleeding the air out from the system.

ive decided to go take a look at it tomorrow and see if it was just air working its way out of the system.
maybe drive it after letting it run for 5-10mins and if all else fails get towed home as cant leave it there.
