Further to my other thread!!
My y reg 1.4 glx seems to have a over hearing problem,
Temp slowly rises to 90 and slightly about around 95 and all is a sudden it jumps to the red and the dash flashes STOP.
The fan does kick in, but only over 95degrees. Then stays on while the needles on the red,
I've not left the engine running to find out what happens.
Anyone got a clue why it could be????
If I'm sat in traffic it rises and I pull over!!!

Could be faulty temp sensor. When it hits red, does it drop down to running temp straight away? Mine does this and its a dodgy temp sensor, cheap fix.

I'm not sure to be honest as I always turn it off when it hits the red,
I might leave it and see what happens

we have talked about the temp. problems alot on here,but to give you quick tips about it,since your car fans kicks in,then you have no problems in your fans,that is a good start,now you have to check your coolant level,to make sure it's on the right level,if that is good,then that is a good step as well,and you don't have a head gasket problem.
That leave us with 2 options,first one,faulty temp. sensor,second faulty thermostat,so since we are getting close to cold weather,it would be a good strat to change your coolant,and change the thermostat,and see how things goes,if the problem keep on.,then change your temp. sensor.

thanks for the reply timon
i have had a good look about on the forum about overheating etc.
I have topped my coolant level up today as it was low but i couldnt see through the side of the bottle to see if it was at the min level as the bottle is discoloured. so yes the fluid level is fine. As is the fan like you have said.
ive just had a quick search on ebay for temp sensor but need to find my engine code first.
So as the gauge says its in the red does it actually mean its overheating??
the temp goes from 95 degrees to red in a matter of a few seconds!!

The radiator and the rad fan should be taking care of the excess coolant temperatures so I'd find out if coolant is flowing through the radiator once the engine reaches the thermostat opening temp
Start the engine from cold and try not to use the cabin heater and wait until engine dash gauge is close to operating temp then go under bonnet and feel the hose from thermostat to radiator. When the thermostat opens the hose should go from cold to hot quite quickly. This will tell you thermostat is opening and coolant is flowing to radiator. If it doesn't even get hot and the rad fan starts up because it senses over heated coolant then you have a stuck thermostat or blockage/air lock. Quite simply. if there's no coolant flow through radiator then the rad fan can't do anything to cool things down and it overheats quickly
The fact you've lost coolant and have just simply topped it up then it may well need draining off/ refilling and proper bleeding carried out to remove air locks. If you've lost a lot of coolant then the thermostat may be jammed closed

There was coolant in the bottle just seemed a bit on the low side
It does seem like its what you have said, just strange how the fan only kicks in when it hits the red!!

just strange how the fan only kicks in when it hits the red!!
There may be a 2nd and very common problem in that the fan slower speed setting may not be working and the only thing you're experiencing is the fast speed fan setting coming in.
Slower fan speed is usually achieved by separate relay and low value resistor but the relay contacts and the resistor can suffer from corrosion as they're very exposed at the front of the car
Even so, the hi speed fan should cut in early enough and not allow the engine temp to go into the red or STOP engine illuminating. But if there's no coolant flow through the radiator then the fan is ineffective. So, watch your fingers with the fan which could start up at any time, but feel the radiator and if it's not getting hot then there's your problem

I will go and grab a thermostat and temp sensor the weekend and get a mate who's a mechanic to flush out the coolant etc.
I left the engine running earlier and after a few seconds of being in the red and the fan running it came straight down to 90 withing 30 seconds.

Not right at all. i got no coolant fan atm and yet, still no overheat.
i presume you got blockage in the radiator or stuck thermostat.
