I have a 206 1.4, and recently the car has started pulling to one side under even slight acceleration and feeling like its wondering over the road. I've had the front jacked up, got someone to hold the steering wheel still against the steering lock and felt for play in the wheels.

Both front wheels had play in them holding the wheels at 3 and 9 o'clock, am I right in thinking this is likely to be the steering rack?

Thanks for any replies.

So the steering lock was on and no keys in the ignition, or you had someone hold it on full lock as you checked for play?

Yes, got someone to hold the steering wheel, pushing it against the lock so it was still.

Also, the power steering feels heavier than it should be. Fluid is fine and isn't leaking, and both wishbones and track rod ends are new.

Thanks

First i would say is to disengauge the steering lock and then check for play, there will always seem to be play in the steering with the steering lock on.

Ok, is it better to get someone to hold it on full lock then?

Thanks

No have the steering in the dead ahead position and with the steering lock off, check for play as you have been doing in the 3 and 9 o'clock positons, that will normally highlight play in the steering. Then check for play in the 12 and 6 positions, that will normally highlight play in the wheel bearing.

I have just checked it this way, there is still slight play in the 3 and 9 o'clock positions, but no play in 6 and 12 o'clock positions.

Are you able to get someone to shake the wheel as you look at the track rod ends and track rods? Then if you cant see any play in it try feeling for play, first in the track rod ends then in the track rods.
