I dont know what this matting on the engine is, or why it is so worn. Should I be worried? Should I be looking to do something different or change a part?

It's a heat protector.
Mine wore away on my Peuegot 206 1.4 HDI and the garage took it off when they fixed a leak in the power steering.
It hasn't had any adverse effects removing it after 6 months.
