I've recently purchased a set of vortex with the intention to respray and refurb.
Just after a bit of advice, do I send them to the Bodyshop and let them take care of it OR do I get them powder coated before hand?
What's the benefit of powder coating pre painting?

I'd personally depending how bad they are if their ok either DIY or send to body shop normally £50 per wheel, that way they can use all their own stuff, I've had mine shot blasted as they were flaking and curbed and their near mint just waiting for paint, hope this helps?

Get them refurded & powder coated in the colour you want.

Have been quoted mates rate at £40 per wheel including full prep and paint from a reputable body shop.
(considering my girlfriend paid £45 per wheel to sort out kerb damage I think this is a decent price)
My NEXT dilemma is tyre size!
I can purchase 205/40's around £10 less than 205/45's. I require 4 so it's quite a bit of dollar to save overall.
Will these elastic band walls provide too harsh a ride??

I've had good work done by City Powdercoaters in Birmingham, but if that's too far I'd try Dave who is near you though, being as he does it on his own he takes his time to do good work and make a good name for himself.
Standard tyre for 17" wheels to provide a more accurate speedo reading are 205/40

citypowdercoaters did mine  looked sweet until some c*** at work took it for a spin and kerbed one

Plastidip over them in what ever colour you want. It's cheap, easy to do and if you dont like it just peel it off. It's good for spraying over stratches and rubs. Its also a matte colour

you don't get wheels powder coated to then be painted
you either get them powder coated or painted

The company who can powder coat my wheels have informed me they don't have a bead blaster to prep wheels.
There's nowhere that local who I can go to. Would sand blasting it be too harsh?

yes sand blasting is too harsh and can leave pits in the wheels

Sand blasting is better then shot blasting I had mine shot blasted they've had 6 coats of paint still need another 2 atleast to hide the pitting, sand blasting should be find aslong as they've been sanded after

Sand blasting is not too harsh if it's done right. I'm a painter and sandblaster. Check out my wheels that I did they where blasted before I painted them. You have to sand them down a bit after to take the rough edges off but it's only 5 min a wheel job its not massive. coat of etch primer, coat of high build primer flat that down then a paint coat then some laquer and you won't tell the difference. If anything blasting gives the wheel a better key so it's less likely for the paint to peel.
I have done loads of wheels this way. Over the summer I have lost count of the amount of motorbike wheels I have done this way including my own.
Powder coating is better then paint as its a lot tougher. Wish we had powder coating equipment at work as I would have done mine this way.
