Hello,
I wonder if someone can help me. I have a 206 1.4 Zest on a 2005 reg. I have bought a tow bar kit but need some advice about fiting the 12N 7-pin electrics.
A couple of people I know said that I needed to check if I needed a multiplex bypass relay. They said that if I did need one but didn't install it then i could damage my car's electrics.
I looked at the page on this forum about multiplex cars and my car does have the multiplexed radio stalk. I therefore assume my car is multiplexed! However, I have phoned a few tow bar companies and they have all said I do not need to fit a multiplex relay; considering they sell them you would think that if I needed one they would try to sell me one?!
So, I would be very grateful if someone here could please offer me some advice. If I don't need a bypass relay then I plan to just wire the trailer electrics straight into the rear lighting loom. But if I do, then I want to fit one as I don't want to bugger up my electrics!

Ive got a plexed 206 fitted towbar with electrics no need for the relay. Easy job took half an hour .

I've got a mux 206 that used to have a tow bar fitted, the wiring is still there and is just connected to the original wiring for the lights.
I also have a non multiplexed (but seems very very similar to multiplexing i.e vin coded radio etc) 406 hdi and that is exactly the same, no relays. The only relay I have on that is an audible indicator relay.

If i remember correctly the relays are only needed if the car has the light failure witch craft.

Hiyah - thank you very much for your help - most appreciated.
So I guess it is a 'simple' question of just working out which wires go to the different rear lights and then just splicing the trailer electrics in with scotchblocks.
I need to be 'taught to suck eggs' so if anyone has any other advice please let me know!!  This is all very new to me

All the wires you want are in the rear left corner of the boot to find which wires what pop the rear light cluster and follow the tracks to the connector note the colour and numbers on the wires and find it further into the boot and splice. Use a multimeter to confirm if your not 100% sure youve got the right wire. Just take your time and double check everything.

You would be better off splicing the wires of the car and crimping female connectors on, use male connectors for your tow bar connections and then they will always be there when you want to use them. Just make sure you cover them with some tape etc so they don't get covered in water. I would never trust them scotchblocks

Thanks all - installed the tow bar electrics today and all works perfectly.
The first thing I did was to undo the retaining nut for the each of the rear light units and disconnect the wire holder froim them. Then, I turned on each indicator light in turnand using a car electrical test light screwdriver I was able to determine which wire was for which light. Then I turned on the the tail lights, and did the same, then the fog light, and finally I had someone press the brakes, each time noting down which wire was for which light.
Once I had this info I disconnected the battery and connected up the wires from the trailer socket, splicing in an audible indicator sounder between the trailer socket wires and the car's wiring loom.
Finally, all was tapped up with insulating tape and rear light replaced and all wire blocks to them attached. It took me a couple of hours in total, but if I were to do it again I guess I could do it in 30 minutes now!
