at the turn of the key the car will give the cranking noise for a split second (the usual cranking noise that would be followed by the humming of your engine), problem is after that short moment it comes with a loud noise quite like a machine gun just fired off. really quick succession of noise that sounds like a machine gun or a nail gun firing off. it ends with a beep and the wipers go up and and slowly, lights come back on like when your engine dies.
its a 206cc.

Well thats a start as it narrows it down to a choice of 4 different engines, 3 petrol & 1 diesel.
More info needed if you want help.

could be just a flat battery, the noise you describe sounds like a starter motor relay.
And as MrBSI said, more info is needed about the car

Dont panic!its just the starter solenoid clicking as the voltage in your battery is too low to turn starter over properly, the clicking is the solenoid clicking in and out of its mesh/match up with the flywheel.
When working properly(fully chatged battery)the starter is engaged as you start her, once in place thanks to the solenoid it spins the flywheel, therefore the engine, and starts up the car and as soon as you release the starting position the solenoid then disengages the starter motor, letting the engine run normaly.
The remedy is recharge your battery or test it and get a new battery if its knackered, also with the battery being flat/unwired you will need to perform a BSI soft reboot to get the car to work correctly again once your battery is recharged that is....look for"dillon"on maintenance how toos for the full BSI soft reboot instructions.
