Hi all,
My dad has been having strange issues with his 206sw 1.4 8v over the last few weeks. It has been running fine up until a few weeks back and i wanted some advice from people on here.
The problems are it sometimes feels like it misfires, ecu light sometimes shows, loss of power and airbag light sometimes displays. Sometimes it can drive for days fine then other days he gets all these problems.
He has took it to a garrage today to be conncted to the diag computer and they are unable to find the issue and the car did not have any issues when he took it in today but i bet as soon as he takes it home it will start again. The garrage says the coil pack and leads seem ok and nothing else seems wrong with the car and its why they are suggesting an ECU issue.
The garrage has suggested that he just pays for the diag and take the car home to see if it happens again. They also suggest that it could be a faulty ECU.
So as they have suggested its a faulty ECU is this a known issue on the 206?
Also i have seen on some websites people suggest that some Coilpacks can cause a spike to an ECU to cause the exact same issues.
I have found a large local ECU Suppliers and Testers near here that have offered to test the ECU for £40. Do you think its worth us removing the ECU ourselfs and getting tested before anything else?
We are just not sure what to do first as we dont want to just keep fitting parts to try and find the fault.
If was was to get a new ECU or this one repaired would we need to change the Coi Pack, Leads and Plugs at the sametime also.

My dad has also told me that the following has happend over the last few weeks as well.
1, When starting the car in the morning all dials on the cluster goto the left and he gets a clicking sound which he thinks are from the dials.
2, Date and time changes to 00/00/00 00:00 on the display clock on dash
3, Sometimes engine does not even start but if he try's stright again the engine starts fine.
4, He was driving along and at stop lights the rev's went down zero and car stalled and he had to restart again.

Got car back. Garrage could not find anything wrong so they did not charge us in the end for diag. They suggest get them to send ecu for testing or for us to send ecu ourselfs.
How easy is it to remove ecu and should we disconnect battery first. Will doors etc lock once we re fit it

What diagnostic equipment did the garage use?

I am not sure as my dad took this in but they tend to charge people £35 to £40 to read it and its a known garrage round here which tends to take 1 to 2 weeks to get booked in due to it being very busy and good service.

Will check them on Fri. Are they just metel straps around 1cm wide fixed to the body work do I need to remove battery and ecu to check these

I would check the negative wire coming off the battery connected to the gearbox top firmly and securely and not rotten. Yes you have to take battery box out to do this properly.
Then also check the earth points for the ecu (depends on model) usually beneath it.
You have to take-off ECU (disconnect battery properly first) and check all earth points you can find in the engine bay generaly.
The clock reseting is clasic earth/battery problem, and interminent starting/cutout is often poor ECU earth.

My old old car (206, 1.1) would do similar things. Peugeot tried to tell me that my ECU was corrupt, but I had the coil pack and coolant temp sensor replaced and all was fixed. My earth lead was also corroded/coming loose from the battery which was also replaced.

Ahh the old 'it's a faulty ECU sir' again. Every garage does it, as already said, check the neg straps, if it's not the problem I will be surprised enough to eat my own shoes!! (Disclaimer: shoes in question are made of gingerbread and can be eaten at any time).

Many thanks for this. Will check at weekend when the light is good.
So if the earth is bad will it just look rusty etc or split?
Do i just check them with a visual check or use a meter to check
