Driving home in 5th gear yesterday I heard something flick up and hit the bottom of my car. Slowing down for round about a few hundred yards later I went to drop gear and the gear stick was really sloppy and swung from side to side. Could then only select 3rd and 4th for the rest of the journey home.
The anoying thing was my girlfriend actually said while driving my car 30mins or so earlier 'don't blame me if I break your gearbox' (she doesn't like the quickshift) she jynxed it!!
Would this issue be a broken gear linkage? I know it is a common problem but could it be anything else?
Also is there any difference between the size and fittment of gear linkages through out the 206 range? (I'm aware the 180 has a hydraulic gearbox or something).
I'm looking at getting some group n or simillar designed linkages if this is the issue so I don't have a simillar issue again.
Any input would be greatly appreciated as I'm heading over to France, Belgium and holland in 5 weeks an need to get it sorted asap! Thanks in advance!

I can select 3rd and 4th but nothing else. When it was in 3rd or 4th the gear stick could swing from one side of surround to the other or as my friend described it 'like a mixing bowl'

I've had on my 1.4 if the middle linkage popped off I could get 3rd & 4th but nothing else and it went side to side really easily.

I'll be taking a proper look today. What's the best way to find out? Will I need to get under the car?

Yes there is one large rod that goes to the selector system on the gearbox. On the top of the box there are 2 smaller rods (i think from memory). One of those has come off. Thats why it will let you select some gears.
If its popped off then I would get a new one from Peugeot as the nylon in th joint has worn down. Plus it will make your shift a lot better

A common problem indeed.
This is when my already once welded control rod snapped taking away a part of sub-frame's pivot together:
www.206info.co.uk/Foru...tml#559291
In my case it's the control return part #5:
www.206info.co.uk/Foru...tml#559174
In your case -- one of the link brackets #3 might have just split in a half.
Mind you that there are two gearbox systems, the linkages are as follows (could be identified by the shape of (my snapped) part #5):
www.peugeotforums.com/...post2.html
You'll need to get under the car, and remove bottom engine cover.
You might find it is hard to access the link system, as it is blocked by power steering hoses.
Couple of cable ties tied carefully to the side can provide better view.
Good luck!

Thanks for all the help guys. It's lovely out... Cold and wet! I'm sure the fingers will love this!
I sure hope it's only part #3 as it would seem alot easier to replace!
If I get stuck I'll be back!

Just look down from the top, just pull the air intake pipe off and you will have sufficient access.

All linkages were attached and intact. There was what only I asume to be a bolt missing from one of the pivots that connect to a shaft in the gearbox. I can drive again! May still change the linkages as the gear stick is still a bit sloppy. Gonna change my quickshift to one that sits in the original gear stick housing as I've gone off my alloy race/rally one.
