Hello,

I have a problem which I hope you could help me with.

The thin pipe that connects the coolant bottle to the left side of the radiator is leaking at the joint on the radiator end.

Drip, drip drip like a tap - I have to refill with water once/twice a day!

I have had greenflag look at it who said that it is the clip that hold the pipe in place and i need a new one (which is impossible to find)

The garage had it all day and they fitted a new pipe but it still leaked.

They suggested that I could get a £28 radiator repair kit though they are not sure what is included in it and if it will work. They also suggested a new radiator, though again, it depends if a clip is provided or a different way of attaching the pipe...

 


 


 


Even if I remove the clip and push the pipe in by hand, it still drips at the joint...

Do you think it would be feasible to get some plumbers/duct tape and wrap it around the end before inserting it into the radiator, to make the joint tighter?

Options/advice is greatly appreciated! I don't know much about cars...

Yes use some PTFE tape will improve it for sure, may even fix it

Is it a new radiator? I think those clips allow the old hose to be attached to the new style radiator.

You've only got part of the clip there... I'll check my stash. By the way, a pack of 3 from the dealer is over £20!

These are similar. A pack has a straight clip and 2 x 90 degree bend clips. Cant see why it would leak though. The part you have just locks it all in place.

If its just the clip that needs replacing just go to Halfords & get a jubilee clip, they come on all sizes & cost about £1.

Nope it isn't a new radiator. Hoping not to have to get one as money is very tight this month.

Are those actually what is pushed in the pipe and then you place the plastic end in the radiator? - The mechanic mentioned that it would be great if you could get them. - Do you know what they're called?

The guy in the garage compared the clip to another peugeot he had in for repair and showed me the clip, it was the same, just a fraction bigger. I can't find any anywhere!

Yep it does appear just to lock it in place. Though without it and me holding it firmly in, it still leaks. So I am of teh mind that it isn't just the clip that its the end of the pipe that pushes into the radiator in general - I don't think the seal is good anymore, but why would that change now?

I had a small bump at the traffic lights and 40 minutes later I noticed I was leaking water from the joint. Apart from my bonnet, there was no other damage though.

I'm very certain that's not the original radiator. Newer cars from the factory use that radiator with a thinner hose going to it. The hose has a clip like that built into it. Those silly clips allow the use of the old thicker rubber hose like you have fitted. I actually believe it's called a radiator repair kit. It's a rip off for just three adaptors.

You can't use a hose and jubilee clip directly fitted the radiator either. The inlet isn't round.

I'd take it all apart and get some sealant on it. Then put it back together, let it dry and top up the coolant if necessary.

Firstly I may try the PTFE tape method, as that's the easiest and quickest, but Edward your knowledge is greatly appreciated! -

- By taking it all apart, what exactly do you mean? - The plastic top of the radiator?

Could I apply sealant to the pipe joint and then insert it into the radiator, when inserted apply some sealant around the outside of the joint, leave to drive and pop the clip back on?

The mechanic did warn me against the repair kit, he wasn't sure what was in it and the rep from peugeot wasn't sure either!

The car was 2nd hand 5 years ago, so its possible they replaced it - just checked and couldn't find any documentation regarding the radiator though.

Oh, lastly, what sealant? (Type)...

Just take the hose off the adaptor I.e.the bit with the clip. Remove the adaptor from the radiator and get some sealant on it.make sure its as dry as possible. Just a small amount of sealant is needed. Just get some sealant from halfords.they can recommend what to use.

Just noticed! - If you look at the first picture of the close up of the joint.

That shiny I think is glue/sealant. There is a white/pink paper bit stuck onto it, which made me think at the time that something was stuck there.

Is it possible that it was already repaired in the past and glued/sealed? - My car bump broke the seal as it only started leaking after the accident!

Thoughts on this would be interesting, also please read the above post if you just skipped to this one.

You haven't been to my local Halfords LOL! I wouldn't trust them with the simplest advice! Though i will check with them i guess, nothing to lose.

Thinking of going with the Loctite 5922 Flange Sealant : a slow drying, flexible setting paste that changes to a pliable, non-hardening film through solvent evaporation. It seals flanges, fittings, connections and flexible assemblies against leakage and increases the reliability of gasket seals.
It is suitable for valve cover gaskets, oil pan gaskets, threaded connections, cover plates and hose connections.

Halfords recommended that I get Black Silicone Sealant. Multipurpose and according to the box is ideal for sealing glass, electrical connections, water proofing joints and as a replacement gasket.
It forms a tough waterproof seal, stays permanently flexible and withstands extremes of temperature.

Just waiting for the car to cool down and will be trying it in 30 mins!

It's not the rubber hose that's leaking. So a jubiliee clip won't help.
