Hi there, just recently purchased an X plate HDi 2.0 with 98k. Just recently noticed sometimes the car will judder/shake quite bad at 40-50mph in 5th gear. Quite bad at times. Tried searching the forums for a few ideas on what it could be and I've put it down to maybe unbalanced wheels, wheel bearings, engine mounts, clutch judder? Although clutch feels and operates fine. Any ideas people?

More than likely wheels out of balance, but i would check all suspension components.

As you mentioned, wheel balancing would be the first thing to check.
Is it only in 5th? Or does it still shake at 40-50 in say 4th gear?

Could also be suspension?, friend has a similar problem, was in 3rd 4th and 5th doing the same sort of speed... the suspension was knackered.

Don't know the diesels that well but is 40 - 50mph too slow for 5th gear? Is it just the engine juddering due to revs to low or too much throttle applied at that rpm?
If it is wheel balance it will always do it at the same speed. Not just sometimes.

Still havent had chance to diagnose this shaking, but my mechanic friend has been in it several times and mentioned that it may be a driveshaft having play? It seems to be getting worse, it starting to shake on the motorways at 70mph. Could this be true? And if so, big job?

I had shaking at high speed braking due to buckled wheel hub->wheel wobble (search on this forum)
If driveshaft plays, new one costs £~80. If you can replace brake disks yourself (have tools), should be no problem to DIY shaft replacement altogether.
Otherwise labour should not be too much higher than disk replacement.
But if play comes from within tranny, things might look gloomier.

Check wheels for dents and balancing...
Check tyres for eggs n blebs...
Are discs warped?..
Try these first

Right checked all those things and everything ok. So does this point to a driveshaft? Or maybe engine mounts? I don't have the facilities eg. ramp to check these. Need it sorting soon, its beginning to bug me and dont fancy it breaking haha!

hi there
I have the same issue with my W-Reg, firstly I was told it was a gearbox issue, so I have that replaced, the car come back and the problem is still there, now they tell me its a drive shaft issue, awaiting a part, I think you have the same issue as mine so it a drivshaft issue,

I dont think it will be gearbox as it seems to operate fine, although it does whine when im downshifting and letting it coast but once clutch is in the whine goes. Maybe this is driveshaft issue or maybe a whiney diff. Let me know if yours is a driveshaft mate it may point me in the right direction

I have yet another order of another driveshaft (keep Getting the wrong ones grrrr)
hopefully get it fitted sometime next week,

Ok well just thought Id shed a bit of light on this situation in case anybody else is experiencing the same.
I eventually discovered it was in fact the nearside rear wheel wobbling at speed, which was caused by knackered rear axle bearings! There was a lot of movement in the rear arm, so priced up a bearing kit and got the new bearings fitted by my self. It was actually fairly straight forward to do, got the car on axle stands and had a crack. Was expecting it to be a pain in the backside. I watched a 3 part video of a guy on youtube and found that to be a great guy. Very glad I didnt go down the whole replacing the axle route. The other side seems fine for the minute. It was also good to see there was little wear on the stub axle. Very pleased with the result, feels like a whole different car!
