Hi!
I currently own a pug 206 1.6 lx on a x plate.
We always knew the oil temp sensor was a bit iffy because as soon as you turned on the ignition it would fly straight up to the top, light up then after a few secs it would drop to 0 then function as normal.
As of yesterday it now flys to the top but only drops down to half way even on a cold engine and gradually increases as the car warms up. The oil level has been checked and is fine plus the coolant temperature is spot on with no issues there.

So I have a few questions if somebody may know

1. Is it likely to be the oil temp sensor
2. Where is the oil temp sensor located
3. Is it going to be another expensive task and how do we check it

I think that the way it used to work was normal and was there to prove the gauge worked.

What you have now though does seem wrong and I would suggest oil pressure sensor. If you can use a voltmeter you can test it. Someone here should be able to tell you exactly where it is and what readings to expect. A simple test should be to unplug the sensor.

If you don't have any luck with other advice I will look at the Haynes manual later.

Im wanderin wethet it might be worth doing a bsi reboot???

The results of which could be helpful...

Just follow the steps from the list given in the HOW TO section under Bsi reboot...its unlikely gonna be a long term fix but it will eliminate it.

Is the oil temp also an oil level on yours? It is on the 206CC we have. So the first few seconds it acts as the oil level and then reverts to the temp gauge.
Down to just the 1.4 HDi. Cayman Green 2.0i CC sold.

EmmaMas: worth reading the manual (if you have one) and checking the actual oil level.

Tbh I'm not sure what that gauge is actually for. These are practically identical to our clocks......

I'm talking about the gauge farthest right.

I don't think we can reboot the bsi because we don't have a remote fob, only a manual spare key :-/

EmmaMas: do the oil level check first and if it is low top up to correct level. If it works it is a free check and your car needed the oil anyway.

After that I don't know enough about 206 fitted with oil temp/level gauge to advise further without reference to other literature (Haynes Manual.)

It's definitely not the oil level, just topped it up with magnatec to be sure. Now the needle isn't even dropping to 0 when the ignition is off it just drops a little to just under half :-/

I now suspect Internal fault with sensor or a wire shorting and the oil level reading is also being fed to the temperature gauge.

The sensor is fitted to the front of the block just to the right of the oil filter. Disconnect the wires, make sure they don't short together or against the block and see what the gauge does when you start the car.

Hubby unplugged the switch and when he put the ignition on the needle was just flicking between 90 & 140. Not sure what to make of it now. Got a feeling it may also be the gauge itself :-/

emma_mas: get hubby to have a VERY close look at the wiring to the connector for any chaffing that has worn through the insulation and exposed the conductors that may be touching the body or engine or shorting the two wires together. If there isn't any then I would reluctantly be inclined to try a new sensor; I really hate recommending changing parts to fault find but I can't find any data on the sensor or gauge that will let me tell you what readings to expect nor therefore how to test it. In fact I can't even find a replacement part listed from my usual on line suppliers. Sometimes the part list will include what readings (resistance to expect) on a new part.

I suggest that you ring either carparts4less or buypartsbuy (usually the cheapest) and see how much a new sensor is but I still hate suggesting this.

It frustrates me that I can't offer more advice on this item.

You may be right about the gauge but it is relatively unusual for gauges to fail. Sensors yes - due to the heat and vibration they are exposed to it is not uncommon but it is much more rare for a gauge to fail.

Any other forum users able to take resistance readings from their working sensors and repeat them here or disconnect their sensor and see what the gauge does?

Thank you for all your advice. Going to get a price for the part and try to eliminate it. Hubby is going to check the dials anyway because the muppet who had the car before has changed the dial facia to Lockwood ones so it wouldn't surprise me of he's knocked something because if you bang the dash slightly the needle will drop a little. Oh I don't know, bloody car. We don't want to give up on it though because for its age and mileage it runs really well. Ill keep you updated incase anybody else is suffering with the same probably Smile

That could be the problem. May have damaged the needles, not put them back on the spindles correctly, damaged the connection to the cluster or just completely botched the job up.

EmmaMas: It sounds like you and hubby have found the problem yourself.

Next step - you can take the dash panel out and then take the gauge out of the dash panel. The needle can then be carefully pulled off of its centre spindle then reseated so that it isn't rubbing against the display. It really is quite easy. It only takes the needle to brush the display very gently to stop it working as the return sping in these gauges is very, very weak.

A Haynes manual will show you how to remove the dash and somewhere on here or another forum I use is an "how to" with photos for resetting the needle.

Removing the dash panel:-

1) Put steering to lowest setting.
2) Working from the bottom carefully pull out the dash panel surround.
3) There is a single screw (top centre) holding the dash panel in place. Remove it.
4) Carefully pull the dash panel towards you disconnecting the cables as required.

It is very simple.

EDIT: I think the gauge removal with photos is on 206GTI.net but I can't find it. I was looking at it late last night in readiness for this very post.
