I have brought my parners 1.4 petrol 206 has she went and brought the 1.4 hdi .The running costs of the petrol 1.4 is not that good to be honest, i do a lot of short journeys and i average 30 mpg , got 20 mpg in my impreza turbo.
The car has been fully serviced new oil ,filters,plugs, even cat and lambda sensors been replaced. The car has had 2 tankfulls of injector cleaner treatment and with new fuel filter.
Car runs very well just thought it would be a lot better on fuel, my partner says she has noticed a big difference with the 1.4 hdi . I am thinking of saving for one too but someone told me petrol is more reliable and that the hdi are problematic .Any views please .

From what I've heard the hdi's are very reliable. The 1.4 isnt the fastest but very good on fuel. The only one everyone will recommend you stay away from is the 1.6hdi.

Well i have spent just over £800 on the 1.4 petrol plus the purchase price of £200 but it does have private plate worth £450. I am in no rush to get rid yet would like to save for a 207 hdi. Anybody running a 1.4 8 valve, is 30 mpg average about right.

I get about 40-45mpg driving 2 miles to work every day but i do tend to floor it to get up to speed quickly which i know hits the mpg pretty well, but i do sometimes chug along at 35 in 5th and get a constant 70mpg too. check that the egr is plugged in at the back of the engine bay behind the fuel filter its a little blue plug, you can have it unplugged which i do but it does affect the mpg slightly, also check the tyres as that affects it pretty badly if they are low too

Sounds quite low to be honest, before i sold it my 206 would do 46mpg on 30mile runs (30mph avg speed), 42mpg running around town, and with the aircon on flooring it for a week i got a minimum of 37mpg.
That was also on bog standard Asda fuel, i'm also quite heavy footed when it comes to getting up to speed.

Think you must be on about the Hdi and not the petrol 1.4, my fuel filter under back of car.

Just done the cambelt and waterpump, thermostat, aux belt, plus camshaft seal has it was leaking slightly, put it all back together and its still leaking slightly from crank seal. I am not taking it all to bits again working outside in this weather, its not leaking much or going on belt, the belt i took off was dry. I will do it when the sun comes out .
I have filled the car with fuel put some more injector cleaner in, so will see what it averages again, then i will fill with super leaded and see if thats any better.
The car is standard and engine has been flushed and filled with 5-40 fully syth oil, new oil, air, pollen, fuel filter,spark plugs( ngk),complete new exhaust system including new cat and lambada sensor, one before cat not been changed but will be changing that soon. Rocker cover gasket changed, sump gasket replaced (was not one on it just small amount of sealant. While the rocker cover and sump was off i cleaned them all up insde and cleaned the oil pump and strainer.
Drop links ,lower arm, o/s driveshaft,front pads,coolant, gearbox oil, brake fluid, front windscreen all been replaced. Tyre pressures all done, i was hoping for a 40 mpg average.

My TU3 is returning 33.2 mpg average at moment.
That's around town, climate control on & heavy right foot.
I did see 39.9 mpg average on a long motorway run a few months ago

Surley you should get more then 39mpg on a motorway run, i thought these surposed to be good on fuel.

The basic TU engine design is 26+ years old now, it may now have modern injection kit fitted but it's still isn't going to return the same mpg as a much more modern design of power plant.
The only good thing is the TU is pretty much bulletproof for reliability.
I was more then happy with 39.9 mpg average on a run

I thought NGK spark plugs were a no no, as they cause issues??

Mine runs fine, i thought NGK were a good brand. My new lambda sensor is NGK too.
