Below are the images I have taken and what connects to what but we are unsure as to what the brown 'box' is.

The little brown thing is part of the breather system for the fuel tank.

If the plastic hose is split it could create running problems.

Will the car run if you keep your foot on the throttle? i.e. hold the engine speed just above idle speed?
Does the car drive as normal until you slow down at a junction etc?

As Edward said, sounds like you've got air getting into the system.

Well they couldn't come yesterday but managed to get it to their garage today, not been able to speak to the person working on it but spoke to his colleague and he said there is an electrical fault but cannot say anything more so will need to ring in the morning.

It did look like some work had been done but will only know tomorrow, hoping it is not an ecu problem.

Do you think I can remove mine??? Charcoal canister isn't attached to anything...what's to stop fuel coming throught he vent system?

Anyway, to the original topic I can't see an electrical fault causing a whistling noise. The hose needs fixing first before looking at other stuff. Does the car ever out just when driving? Or just at idle?

One end of mine isn't connected to the engine anymore so it's not doing anything....just don't want it to be an easy escape route for fuel!

And what will you replace it with? Something that is unknown to you with similar faults waiting to occur?

You may be right planning to sell it but do you know what you replace it with will be any better.

Depending on age I don't think second hand ECU for this would be expensive although they would be an unknown entity.

If you are serious about a Punto have a really good look underneath at the area where the sill joins the floor pan and that inside lip along both sides. Also check the boot floor under the car and lifting the boot carpet. Also lift up the rear seats and look for rusty water marks along the seams as that is failed underseal and the water starting to rot the car underneath that underseal.

These cars can be real rusty rot boxes!

Also have a good look on the forums hundreds of these seem to have head gasket problems.
