Hi,
Sorry if this question has been answered before.
I recently had an accident during the winter, snow weather we had in the UK.
Cutting the long story short, I had put on the spare wheel from underneath the boot, got a new wheel and tyre put on, had the spare wheel put back in the hatch it came out from.
What is happening now is that the spare wheel is rattling slightly as I'm driving.
The bolt holding it in place is not secured properly, but the problem is that its very hard to tighten. Having taken it to Kwik-Fit, they tried and could not do it, thinking as the bolt has never been used, its rusted or seized?
I'm thinking,
Could it be the jack tool that inside the spare tyre?
Should this be removed? Will it have any effect?
Should I remove the old bolt and get another one? If so what size are they and where would I get one?
It's getting to a point where its rather annoying hearing this rattling noise, thinking its going to fall off while you drive! Any advice would be appreciated.

You need to get the jack holder box in just the right place before you tighten it up.
For your own piece of mind, have a look under the rear bumper and check the bolt is far enough through so that the spare wheel cage can't jump off.
If the bolt is rusted, try a bit of WD40 on the threads and see if it will tighten any more.
New bolts are available from Peugeot. IIRC, there are 3 different ones.
Have you checked that it isn't the tailgate rattling? They are known to bounce a bit on the catch once the plastic wears on the striker post. A bit of insulation tape on the post can solve this.

Best bet is to probably park your car up at night and take the bit that bolts together (the bit in the boot and the bit that hooks to the cage under the car) and soak it in some oil or something like that over night then put it back on your car the next morning, hopefully it should free everything up and allow you to tighten it up properly.

macca1411, Thanks for your reply.
I put the jack holder box inside the wheel? I'm assuming its the right place, that was where it was placed when I took it out.
It does seem to be secured, but not tightened enough, when we tried to push the hatch lever just under the rear bumper, it pushes the bolt up about 2-3 inches. The tool that Peugeot provide to loosen/tighten the bolt proves useless.
Is it advisable to get the bolt from a Peugeot dealer? its a 12 year old model car, 2001, 51 plate.
Sorry i do not know what IIRC means, sorry.
I'm pretty sure its not the tailgate, as the noise comes from underneath the car

Thanks for your reply.
The guys at Kwik-Fit put WD40 on it today, said to leave it overnight and check back tomorrow to see it that works. If that fails, I'll use your method.
I appreciate your advice, if that doesn't work, I think I'll get a new bolt.

IIRC means if I remember correctly
Yeh beat place to get the bolt would be from a Peugeot dealer, wouldn't break the bank I wouldn't of thought.

When you refit the bolt smear the exposed threads in grease. When fitted smear the exposed thread with grease.
If you haven't replaced it yet take the old bolt out and give it a thorough clean with a wire brush and then coat with oil. that may be enough to make it nice and easy to turn.
