Hi Folks.... back again with another slight problem.
I am currently finding that the car does not fancy going into gear every now and then. while im on the move, everything is fine. if i knock it out of gear and coast to a stop i cant get it in first or second gear, its gradually getting worse though, once i get it locked in gear say 3rd or 4th i can then get it in first...... could this be the early signs the box is on the way out. i have recently had the clutch, cam water pump etc done.
If i need a new box will a normal GTI one fit or is it a specific 180. also can this job be done by myself as i dont fancy letting the garage rape me again.
Thanks all.

The 138 box will fit, but the ratio's are different, the 180 has a very long 1st gear.
Gearbox change is'not that complex at all if your competent with a set of spanners.

ahh, i thought the ratios would be different after i hit publish... i will stick with a 180 box if i need one i think....
thing is the car has only covered 70k and i havent really abused it.
I have never changed a box on a car but ill willingly give it ago. i do enough bits and pieces on my bike but this would be the biggest thing i would have done. In a way i am looking forward to it.

Remember the 180 uses cables for the gear change where the normal GTI uses rods.

so all of this sounds like the box is on the way out.... i am looking on flea bay and they are a tidy 150 quid which isnt too cheap from cars that have covered the same milage i have done..... does this mean they are likely to be on the way out soon.

It all depends upon how the box has been looked after, if it's been abused with traffic light grand prix's it's whole life it is more than likely on its last legs yet a box that's had a careful owner will have thousands of miles left.

Drop me a PM if you need a box. I've got one here from a 180.
