Hi,
I've got an '04 plate 206 1.4 manual petrol fever.
It's running fine other than stalling when starting when very cold.
It will always start ok and run fine, but if I need to slow and then get going again it will stutter and stall unless I give it loads of revs. It always starts again without a problem and never does this a second time.
From looking around the web it seems to need a new engine coolant sensor (or coolant temperature sensor... are these the same thing?).
I found a few posts saying that it is a green sensor located a couple of inches north east of the dip stick.....
"The coolant temperature sensor is clearly visible as you stand at the front of the car it`s located 2inches north east of the oil dipstick. Look for a wiring plug connector coloured green attached to a hexagonal plug which screws into the thermostat housing. Remove air cleaner for better access, unscrew the sensor and prepare for coolant loss, then just replace it with a new one and top up the lost coolant, keep checking the coolant level for settlement as air locks will probably take time to disperse. Make sure the engine is cold before starting this work. If air locks are a problem keep squeezing the bottom radiator hose will help. Remember to use 50/50 antifreeze/water mixture, job should be a doddle.....Mike."

I bought one of these:

But the wire connector is different to the one on my car. Mine is 2-pin but the part I bought has 2 wider pins facing the other direction. From searching for parts they all seem to be like this, or look different and don't have the hexagonal base.
Have I got the right part but looking in the wrong place? I've read about other possible sensor locations near the radiator or in harder to reach places.
This seemed like an easy job!

Well the ECT has nothing to do with car stalling when cold,what you need to check is the stepper motor :),and clean it if it's dirty.

same problems atm,and rough idle. cleaned throttle body,idle control valve,done a fule treatment. removed the ECT for a trial,it still evades me lol

thanks for the replies. it's a b***h. at least it's not much of a problem, at worst having to start the car twice if it's cold. my last sensor problem involved the car cutting out every time i put the clutch in no matter what speed i was doing. fun on the motorway!
i've had a reply on another forum saying "There is a software update for this. Call to your dealer.".
worth the hassle/cost?
i've seen a lot of people comparing the ect to the choke on old cars, hence stalling when cold if it is faulty.
Tigger. have you tried putting a new ect in? do you have rough idle all the time or just when cold?
