So, today me and my boyfriend took a drive to stourport as the weather is nice. We got there fine, had a nice day and gambled some money. In the wat back we travelled the a449 way and everything was smooth. We hit a set of traffic lights and stopped with the traffic. Then we hit a problem. As we went to pull off in first the car red lined and wasnt mooving alot. Stumped we stuck it into second gear and it was slugging at about 20mph and still high revs and then it started red lining, we were holding all the traffic up, into 3rd gear the dial on the rev couter shot back up to 75 into red. Still slugging at about 25mph by this point. The car was sounding terrible at such high revs. Put it into 4th and no prioblems at all. Pulled onto a car park and popped the bonnet up, it was hot! Checked water, very hoy but levels were fine, checked oil, that was fine. Left the car off for about 15 minutes got back in and it was fine? Drove fine home? What the hell is wrong?

might be a simple suggestion but sounds like incredibly bad clutch slip or gearbox damage

my 206 did this a few times, it sorted itself out though, it didnt have a constant slip. only every now and again, id go for overheated clutch.. if it isnt that, the problem is deffinately in the clutch, unless the problems a little further back, in the gearbox, such as broken diff. which ive also had the joys of encountering that problem, but if its the diff, or anything on the gearbox side of the clutch, then youll hear crunching of the gears trying to turn, but failing at what ever has broken. but like i say, my clutch that went every now and then, was due to overheating, and i doont know if there's a way to sort it, other than replacing the clutch? it just sorted itself out on mine.

Hate to be one to add to the bad news but my car did this to me and it was the clutch that had gone, wasn't a cheap fix if i'm honest, be glad that your gearbox hasn't gone either or you'll be forking out a fortune!

Depends what you call cheap. I paid £130 for a new clutch, seals, oil and labour. That's fairly reasonable.

Id call £130 a bargain for that.

Some people don't understand the real price of parts / labour & added costs of running a car.
