Couple of questions,
You say you bought a cheap french car, do you mean it was cheap or are you reffering to it being a cheap because its a french car?
What MOT and service history did you get when you got the car?
The noise you get when you try to wheel spin, you said in your introduction post that the cv joints were completely buggered if they havnt been changed it could be down to them surely?
The engine temp gets the upper end of warm, whats do you class as the upper end of warm?
As you say try cleaning the icv and see what happens to the idle, might not fix it but then also because it doesnt, it doesnt mean its not the cause and it might need replacing, which is cheap to fix.
Just trying to give some advice on how to make it a good runner

To be honest, the 206 I've owned for the last year has been the most reliable french car I've owned, might be because its a diesel, but non the less, I've owned 3 Peugeot 106's and a Clio, and this by far is the most reliable, not the most fun because its practically standard.
The temp going up while driving could be a dodgy thermostat, or an air lock.. or the water pump is on its way out, either way still not majorly expensive.
I had a problem with my 106 with the TU engines with the idle.
With the 106 you can reset the ICV by turning the key 2 clicks on, then back off 4 times (sounds like total crap but it worked for me :S)
And yes, driving like a c**k does break cars I learnt that the hard way after snapping 2 drive shafts at the knuckles at the same time 3 weeks after passing my test.

It was cheap because it was 400 quid, needed a few bits doing and came with as many spares as i could pinch off another one in a week, its got tax and mot till august. no service history but everything looks fairly clean.
the cv joints were replaced with 2nd hand ones off the other one, they dont click on cornering but the shaft may be spinning inside of them..
i cleaned the ICV within the first week i had it, it sorted the issue for the past 3 weeks, now it has started to do it again so i'm going to clean it out when i get the chance.
as for the overheating, if you call each line 10/c. its got to about 105ish before i let it cool down, the coolant tank is pretty mucky. myself i think the h/g is gone and someone has radweld'd it to get it through last years mot.
with the whole driving like a t**t thing, since the first time it made the gearbox noise ive layed off it alot, i just want it sold so i can get a dturbo.
