Hi, new to the forum, but had my car for a few years. Its a 2.0 hdi sw, just failed it's MOT with a dodgy back axle (had a mystery knocking for a while, no one knew what it was until now). So after a rear axle with drums and abs...hard to find on ebay! Loads without abs! Any advice/parts welcomed!

What exactly is wrong with the axle? The axle is a big old beast.. What was the reason for failure? (You should have an explanation).

Just buy a GTi180 axle and swap it over... you'll have discs that way and not have to worry about the beam not having abs.

Well I was told it was the internals that have gone as there is a lot of play, don't have the certificate right now as am at work, but it does have more detail on there as to the problem. Been told that if I can get one it's an easy job to drop out the old one and pop a new one up as a complete unit, would you agree with that? (I don't know a vast amount on these cars!)

How much work is involved with fitting disks instead? I was told if it has abs then I need one with abs, would you disagree wit that Uz?

It's a virtually straight swap mate... never done it on a 206 but I'm sure the same applies as the 106 where you have to change the brakelines an just handbreak cable. Did it on my 106 Quiksilver with a GTi rear beam. But if your cars got ABS than you need an ABS beam due to the trailing arm being different.

OK thanks Uz, that seems to tie in with what I'v heard. I'll check out putting disks on with ABS as they seem more common than the drums!

Only other thing I can suggest is that if you've got a second car, whip your beam off and take it up to imaxles if your local to them. £300 they charge to fully refurb it. May be better than buying a second hand beam that you don't know the history of.

Fair enough, I know I can get a refurbished one locally (ish) for around £250, was hoping to get a used one for around the £100 mark lol. I'm tight.

I did a drum to disk conversion on a hdi a couple of months ago. Pretty much as you say really. The hardest part I had was I had to move the compensator valve over as well as I was putting an ABS axle on a non ABS car. Easiest place to swap the brake lines around is at the flexi lines on the axle, as both axles run the same. Then it's just handbrake cables, bleed up the brakes and off you go.

I have the 180 axle on my Sw, was a straight swap, only thing needed changing was the handbrake cables

Managed to find an axle with drums and abs, thanks for the advice! Also, any one know if someone has a dropped a 180 engine into an sw? Just a thought.
