As my gti 180 i got has been running bad since the day i got it and ive had everything now replced on the car i decided to take it to main dealer for there advice

The car has been running lumpy and causing a misfire when the car is cold but for the first 2-3 mins its fine then i get all sorts of errors on dash

So taken it to main dealer and they said its a common fault on the EW10 2.0 engines have the cold start misfire on some of these 206 models and is caused by the hydraulic tappets "jacking up" and not allowing the inlet/exhaust vales to seat properly and thus cause a running issue

He also said that he could not tell what one is worn too its striped down

I could do this myself as i have all the timing tools to do the floating crank just dont fancy replacing all 16 lifter as the cost will be huge

So has anyone heard of this story before?

Personally no, but then I have seen it before on a 307. Engine oil flush it, and new oil to try and fix the sticking tappet.

Then try a compression check in fault/when cold to find which one

Suppose its worth a try. from what ive seen on the net its more common in a 307.

I know its had a service about 500 miles ago but the oil used was 0-30 according to the service book, could this be why as ive sure its inncorrect oil

Its probably worth doing a bsi reboot and check your battery also...the lumpyness could be low output power on battery and the all sorts of errors on the dash could well be a weak battery and needing a bsi soft reboot..

The instructions for the bsi reboot will be on here in the HOW TO FORUM...

Oil should be 5w/40 fully synthetic and the very best that you can afford..

When I fitted the new head to mine it did the misfire on cold start. Cleared after a couple of hundred yards. The only mechanical thing that could cause the problem was the lifters. They aren't cheap...a compression test would probably highlight where the problem lies.

I believe the lifters can be stripped down and rebuilt but I've never managed to get them apart.

Edward your problem sounds like mine, I need to do a compression test from cold to find were the drop may be

What in PSI should a 180 be, is it best to do a test with throttle open or closed?

I wouldn't worry about PSI. Just see which one is lower than the others.

Compression test with throttle wide open.
After first compression test add a small squirt or couple of teaspoons of oil into the cylinder and test again. A largish improvement on any low reading cylinder will suggest ring / bore wear but a relatively unchanged reading on a low cylinder will suggest valves or head gasket.

Why do people go into "replace this" mode without doing some of the basic (perhaps now considered old fashioned) things like checking plug colours and a dry/wet compression test.

Despite all the modern engine management systems these are still essential and excellent fault finding tests and free.

Look at how this thread starts:-

"I've had everything now replaced"

Yet they haven't had a compression test or plug colour comparison done. Well plug colour check isn't mentioned but I bet it hasn't been done!

Why don't people include these checks before spending money? Beats me!
