Hi All,

This is my first post in this forum so apologies if I've not followed any etiquette etc

Just water to get your ideas on what may be wrong with my pug. I'm relatively new to the car world so apologies if I seem a little slow.

I recently bought a 52 plate 1.1 petrol 206. I knew that for the price I paid it wouldn't be faultless and I'm quite happy to learn about cars as I got. I've already changed a leaking radiator and welded shut a small break in the exhaust.

My problem now is that this morning my car would not start. Firstly checked the two most obvious things. I filled a can with petrol and filled the car, then I got some jump leads and tried to jump start the car...no luck.

The car was showing Eco mode which I understand is when the battery is almost flat it reserves power to start the engine, however this shouldn't be a problem after jumping but still the car wouldn't start.

What I have noticed is that I can't seem to hear the fuel pump priming when I turn the ignition on? I've check the fuses and all are ok.

Does this sound like a fuel pump problem to you? I'm thinking of buying a new fuel pump and replacing it just to check but if rather not spend the money if there's something blatantly obvious that I've missed!

Go in the engine bay and look behind the near side (passenger) suspension turret. There might be a red button there that resets the fuel pump cut off solenoid. There might not be on this age of car, but it's worth a look.

Ohh sorry, forgot to mention that I had checked for that as well, your right my car doesn't have one. I also thought it might be the key, the key cell apart slightly yesterday so was thinking the chip may have been lost. However if I leave my keys in the ignition I can hear the warning bleeps which I assume means that the keys chips is registering correctly.

i wouldnt bother trying to jump the car mate as it could do more harm than good, id charge the battery fully or swap the battery for a new one if its going flat and then see what happens. if its still not starting then start looking at why it isnt starting

Cheers mate I've got a spare battery charging so ill try that. Jut out of curiosity (again I'm new to cars) why would jumping it do more harm then good?

Well I've heard jumping a car (new cars anyway) can fry the ECU. It's also worth checking what spark plugs you have in aswell, as ngk plugs can mess around with the coil pack and cause misfires and starting problems as that happened to my car. I Put a set of Bosch super 4's in and it's ran sweet ever since

Have you checked the fuel pump relay? Best to replace the cheapest parts first than spend a lot on something you may not need

Pop the key apart and make sure the chip is still in there.
The bleeps are just a reminder that the key is in the ignition and the door is open. It bleeps when there is no chip, so don't assume it is there.

Eco mode comes in after about 20 mins. It's a safety mechanism to stop the battery being drained. whether the battery is at 100% or not. The car comes out of Eco mode when the engine is started.

Sounds like an immobiliser issue if the fuel pump is not priming. Have you checked the fuses under the steering column?

I can get mine to bleep just by holding the key near the ignition barrel (not pushing blade in it) and opening the door ... Confused

Was the exhaust on the car when you welded it? Did you disconnect the battery when welding? Did you start the car after doing the welding or is this the first time that you have tried? It could be fried ECU from the welding.

Yeah the exhaust was still on the car, it was a tiny hole so didn't need much welding at all. The cars has been running fine for a few weeks since the welding.

Bought a new fuel pump today (managed to get one for £15 from the local scrappers) I can now hear the pump priming but still no luck getting the car to start.

Not sure where to go next other than taking it to a garage and getting some diagnostics done

Just a quick update..just to be on the safe side I have taken the key apart and checked that the chip is still there and it is..so that is also not the problem.

Changed the battery with a fully charged one and this didn't change anything.

With both the old battery and the new one the car is showing eco mode, it turns over when first trying the car but then the turning over starts to get slower and more laboured like the battery is dying on its a**e! Don't understand how two batteries could sound like they are on their way out.

So who knows whats wrong! maybe the alternator? problems with the earth wires?

Also I'm unsure whether this is something the previous owner has done or if its part of the car but does anyone know if there should be any wiring under the carpet in the boot. There are two wires not connected to anything (they have no connector on them so it would have to be a strip the rubber off and tie the wires together?!)

Get fault codes read, more than likely something simple. Like crank sensor or so on

The mechanic down the road walked up to have a look at the car today. He heard it turn over and said it sounds like a lazy starter motor but he'd take it into the shop to have a proper look first. So he's got the key and will take it down sometime tomorrow. He's gonna phone and let me know what he thinks is wrong and then I'll decide whether I can do it myself or whether I'd like him to do it!
