Hi guys,

Can anyone tell me if there is a difference in the gearboxes for the 138 and 180 as looks like my 180's gearbox might of had it so just wondered if there is a difference when i come to buy a replacement.

Thanks.

Adam

I will check later but apart from ratios I dont think there is much difference.

If you want it rebuilt I can do it for £125 posted back to you plus parts

Pretty sure it is just the ratio's, I know the 180 run's a longer 1st gear than the 138 did. not sure if 5th or the final drive is different either.

Shut it u stupid little f**k, what's the point in posting in all my treads being such a c***? Least I can afford a gti180, and to get the cam belt done!

So apparently everyone knows my financial situation? If I wanted a 180 I would have bought a 180 simples Smile

Thanks Lee just want to know if it will affect the cars performance, i assume if 1st is a shorter ratio it'll obviously get through 1st quicker but assume top end will be no different not that the car ever goes that quick anyway lol

Ratios, and its been a long time since i looked at a 138 but i think they are linkage operated and the 180s are cable.

The linkages can be swapped over quite easily.

Many things can be swapped over easily on these cars but the op was asking the differences between them.

The differences are the the first + second gear and the final drive. It has a taller first gear i.e you can go longer in first before changing to second. It has a larger final drive so that means all your gear ratios are lower than the gti to give it faster accelleration. Flip side is a lower maximum speed.

The linkages are also different due to the 180 being cable operated and the GTI being rods. It is not a simple swap unless you want to take your gearbox apart to change the linkage around??

I have just done all this so know whats involved

206 180 rally car in progress. I may not be perfect but there are parts of me that are f£%$ing brilliant

Thanks, am i reading this right then that a 138 box would accelerate quicker due to the shorter ratio's but the top speed of my 180 would be reduced to that of the 138?

Thanks.

No, the 180 box has a shorter final drive at 3.94 compared to the gti at 3.78. Meaning if you fitted a gti box it would have less acceleration but more top speed

Thanks for clearing that up Addaz maybe its best to stick with the 180 box then.

Is it worth having mine reconditioned or buying a second hand 180 gearbox?

Thanks guys.

Unless you're buying the second hand box from somewhere you know the history of it, i'd just get it reconditioned by a reputable place, otherwise the same thing could happen again.

Thanks Dan, there is a couple of local gearbox specialists in the area, gonna check them both out and see what they think and what the cost is gonna be locally.
