Hello all,

This is my first post on the forums, but have found them extremely useful in the past.

I have a 1.4 HDi and has developed a hissing sound. This first occurred around Feb/March time - I took it to the local garage, and as suspected, it was the cam belt and crank pulleys - they were replaced for £130.00 inc labour

Another thing that was noted from the diagnostic was that the injectors were showing signs of failure, which results in a slight hiss when the engine is ticking over. This issue came and went, but the hissing seems to have got louder over the last week or so.

I know some things are hard to describe so recorded a video of the engine and the hissing sound, which I'm hoping you'll say are the injectors getting worse.

No engine warning lights come up and seems to be running fine (no loss of revs, not running rough)

Which is making me think that the cam belt issue is back as I cant tell the two apart now...

The link to the video is http://youtu.be/nKeCNHvzLWg

On the video I hover around where the hissing seems to be originating from, which is away from the cam belt and to a black cylinder housing.

Any help would be much appreciated, and also any indicative costs for repair (fingers crossed not too much!)

Thanks
Ricky

what a weird noise :/ have you tried running it with the aux belt removed? if its nothing on either of the belts then maybe as you said a very worn injector but I would imagine that would cause running/starting issues if it was THAT bad! I had bad injectors on a 406 but never made a noise like that.

could even be a manifold crack blowing but I would have thought the sound would be random and not regular.

I'm not that mechanical so cant try without the aux belt on. It was only replaced six months ago so i'm on the side of its not that, but could be wrong.

According to the garage, they have the same engines as a Ford Fiesta and the injectors are known to hiss when on their way out.

Sounds like an injector to me, may help if you take off the engine cover, then listen for the noise again.
Maybe then taking off the cylinder head cover, to inspect the injectors, for a leaking one.

Thanks Drewden

I'll remove the engine cover tomorrow and see if the hissing is more apparent, that way I'll definitely know where the source is.

Cylinder head cover...can this be removed with no tools? I'm going to have a quick look before I go to work in the morning so don't want to be getting too dirty!

get some soapy water in a spray bottle and spray it at the bottom of the injectors to test if one of the copper washers has gone.

I have a 2ltr and the injectors are a p**s to get to, after taking engine cover off.
My leaking injector was identical to your noise, and was obvious to spot with diesel around the injector, a 2 pence copper washer sorted it.
Just looked at Haynes on the 1.4, and says you have to take the cylinder head cover off to access the injectors.
Like i said take the engine cover off, and the noise should be more clearer (louder) if its the injector.

Took the engine cover off this morning and the sound became a bit clearer, but didn't have a hex key fitment to take off the cylinder head cover, so will do this tonight. I'm in a white shirt this morning so didn't want to delve too much into it.

Thanks for all your advice, it does appear to be the injectors, in which case i'll get it in at the end of this week to have the seals look at.

Fingers crossed it wont be the injectors that are failing.

How safe is it to drive with the issue? Its been on and off for approx. 6 months and had no issues so far, but never hissed like this. Thinking of going Blackpool 60 mi round trip on Fri night so wondering whether need to get it done pronto if not safe to drive on.

Probably needs doing sooner rather than later. I think you'd be fine doing another 120 miles on it but it isn't doing the engine a lot of good really
