Hi can anyone tell me what the bit of tube pipe going from the battery housing to just behind the radiator is for its a 1.4 8valve thanks

More likely to be a vent to cool the battery or vent any gasses away.

it's a battery cooler line,as the battery gets so hot when there is load,so for longer life and better performance it needs to be cold.

what about when locating the battery in the car does it need to be in a box ??

Hydrogen gas can be generated when charging or rapidly discharging. Mixed with air it's combustible in most ratios and very explosive in some...
There are normal lead-acid starter batteries that are sealed but have a small port that will accept a nozzle for a hose to be routed outside (for instance when mounted in the trunk). In that case no box is needed.Then there's the fully sealed lead-acids and glass-matrix bound ones, but even these have valves to release gas if conditions go bad enough (rather than crack the case...)
