I have a Peugeot 206 petrol car and every now and then when I go to switch it on it hesitates when I turn the key before starting up then seems to mess with the clock and things like that. It also wont sit at idle, as soon as I take my foot off the accelerator the revs go right down and it cuts out. Im on a budget so trying to get it sorted myself rather than paying a mechanic to fix it. Any ideas?

When messing with the dials, do the needles turn anti-clockwise slightly, then go back to normal?

Could be your idle control valve full of crap - use this guide to clear it out with carb cleaner (around £7 from halfords)

Thanks for the advice. The dials go completely back down to zero then back up to normal. Thanks for the link

Is that when the car is running (engine on, or ignition on)?
Also, what year car is yours, and what engine?

When the ignition is on the dials go up, then when the engine gets turned on its like it hesitates and all the dials go down then it switches on and will not stay idle, it just cuts out if I take my foot off of the accelerator. It's a 2002 reg and a 1.4 engine.
