Car - 55 plate 180 GTi

A few months ago I used my car to help jump start a friends car which seemed to take the last of my battery and I started having issues with starting the car.

As I didn't know the history of the battery that was on there, I decided to purchase a new one. This has lasted me a few months but I have a feeling it has died on me, leading me to believe that there is something causing the battery to either drain or not recharge (I believe the alternator is a likely suspect.

So a few weeks ago, I jumped into the car on a very cold evening, started the car fine, then turned everything on, radio, heating on full blast (AC), heated windows etc. When I pulled off the drive the car felt like it was stalling, gave more revs and pulled off fine. I then got to the junction for the main road and as I went to pull off, I got all sorts of warning lights and again felt like it was stalling, didn't give it enough gas and it stalled.

Now it won't turn over.

I bumped the car up the curb and logged it up (with alarm) and left it until the weekend.

When I came back, the key wouldn't turn off the alarm (which is what LED's me to think the battery is at fault), so had to use the key, which set off the alarm but quickly disabled it with the key.

I have attempted to jump start the car, but it was with a 1.2lt fiesta so put it down to not getting enough juice from it. I also tried a battery power pack that I had, but it does say it needs a minimum of 1.5v in the battery to work, which I think it likely doesn't have.

So I took the battery out and had it charging for approx 24hours with an old "trickle charger" that my dad gave me. After reconnecting I put the key in the ignition and waited the recommended time for the electrics to "settle in" and attempted to start.

There doesn't seem to be any progress and although I can hear the starter motor, it just doesn't turn over.

The slightly annoying thing is that I have broken down less than a 10th of a mile away from my house, so my current breakdown cover does not cover me.

My current thought is that my alternator has gone, causing the battery to completely deplete which then isn't charging at all. Is there anything else you guys can think of that would cause such an issue?

I think you need more than a AA battery to start your car.

Have you checked how strong the battery is by using a multimeter? A battery reading of 11.9 volt is a dead battery. Ideally you need more than 12.45 volt (75%) to start the car.

There is some debate about jump starting a 206 due to the complex electrics. There is a chance you can damage the BSI/ECU while doing it.

Also check the earth straps to the gearbox.

Give the starter a whack with a hammer while someone is turning the key just to make sure it's not stuck.

Thanks for the reply,

I tested the battery just before I started charging it, and it showed up as 13. something if I remember correctly. A friend (works with batteries in warehouse) says that a multimeter often reports a false reading, and without a 'drop test' it would be tough to get an accurate reading.

Because the car is not parked outside my house, and has been there for a while now, I am keen to get the thing moved. So have been thinking about taking the plunge and buying a new battery. If that gets it started I can drive it to the garage, pop the bonnet, lock the car and disconnect the battery and they will look at the issue with battery draining mid next week.

If I push the car round the corner, it's a fairly step downward slope, so could potentially bump start it, but would mean a failed attempt would leave the car on a main road. (If I push it far enough it will be outside the 1/4 mile limit to my breakdown cover haha).

Apart from the battery/starter motor problem, just wondered why it would just stall and cut out while the engine was running, have you got enough gas in the tank.
I am thinking you have a bad earth, if fuel is ok, and you indicated you have just replaced battery with a new one.

I have half a tank at the moment, so gas is fine.

Just bought a new battery and after fitting it I still cannot start. Getting issues similar to when I took the battery out to charge.

Shows as being in economy mode, and the door lock relays kicking in.

I then got it to this.

But still wouldn't start.

I have since disconnected the battery and re-connected and am back at the start again (relays ticking). This actually stops me from locking the car with the key.

Currently locked all doors and disconnected the battery and have left it where it is.

Running out of ideas for things I can do personally.

Have thought about maybe getting a mechanic to come to me, getting a company to get me to the garage, or call up AA (not my breakdown people) and saying I've just broken down and pay the "premium" for signing up on the day (if they still do this).

Eco-mode becomes active to save the battery from draining if something like the radio is left on. It should go off once the engine is started.

Have you checked the earth to gearbox connection? It's a known issue and can cause some of the symptoms you're experiencing.

I've seen the Eco-mode come on after long periods, never straight away.

Assume if it's a know issue I can probably find some info within this forum somewhere about it. I've not checked for it yet and have no idea what to look for, but hopefully I will find some info in here. Thanks

In the 1st video it sounds just like mine did when it was flat. Dead flat. But then near the end it sounds like it try's, the 1st bit is as if the immobiliser isn't working, the clicking bit.

Are you just turning it over or are you pumping the throttle as well?

Have tried just turning it over as well as pumping the throttle.

It seemed very much like a battery issue to start with, but based on the "gearbox earth" symptoms it seems like an almost perfect fit.

Gearbox to earth cable is broken at the lug. (Like it was pulled out and was laying on top with what must have been 1 strain of wire connecting it)

Time to get a replacement and get it swapped.

Will let you know how I get on with it.

By the amount of jump starts its highly possible. Just start with that earth strap or whatever has been mentioned and also replace the battery to if you still have poor voltage for the cars systems.

Peugeots run a delicate system, as it by far far more advanced than most! How do you think our looms are so thin compares to bmw for example?
