So I thought my car had broken gear linkage because it wouldn't go into 1st or 2nd (loose in those positions). Turns out the gearbox itself is broken. The car is at the mechanics right now.
They called me and said a reconditioned gearbox would cost £1100 and take 3/4 days to fit. As it's an 03, that's more than the car is worth I expect (it's a 206 Xsi 1.6). They said for around half that they could find a gearbox, but there's no guarantee what condition it would be in.
As this is my first car and this has never happened to me before, can I have some advice about what to do please?
If I decide not to get it repaired, what do I do? Call someone to take it away?
Is it worth getting the reconditioned gearbox? Is it worth getting some random gearbox?
Thanks.

just get a secondhand box & fitting a box should take no more than 3 or 4 hours by a garage
EDIT : with what they have said about fitting i would personally get a second opinion about the problem with the box

I definitely wouldn't pay £1100 for a recon box.
You could probably pick one up from a breakers for a couple of hundred at most, better still see if someone is breaking one on here. Yes there is no guarantee it will be any better, but at least if you buy from a decent breakers, you can take it back if it's faulty and not fit for purpose.
It all depends on what you want to do with the car and how much it stands you at. If you don't get it repaired, and asked a breakers to come and get it, you'd probably be looking at getting a couple of hundred.
Addaz might be able to help you out with a box rebuild if that's the route you want to go down,.

Not sure how I get a second opinion now, as the car is at this place and there's no way I can drive it anywhere else :/. Also, how much should a reconditioned gearbox + fitting cost?

Drewden, I'd have no idea what to do with a part once I'd bought it. I'm honestly clueless about cars.

I just had to change mine today. Paid 140 quid to buy, inspect and replace it. Granted its a friend of mine but still, a grand for it is too much. The gearbox came from a Saxo.

Lulz.....
A new gearbox is less than that. A rebuild can cost as little as 200 ( will have to confirm this price as my thread has been bloody deleted!)
Just let me know, I can remove and fit it to as well if you wanted

Not good enough -
Should have been a sticky then.
Can you recover the thread now and make amends on this?!
I'm sure Ste can as he has a rolling backup... no?
