now then boys and girls,
I have two faults on my 04 plate 1.4
1st issue is a slight knocking noise coming from gearbox area when on idle. when clutch is pressed in it stops.
2nd problem is steering seems to be tight when turning either way but only when stationary...
are these normal on 206's?
maybe nothing...just thought id ask.

The noise from the clutch could be the release bearing.
Can't say I've noticed the steering being tight when stationary, but when the wheels are rotating, the steering moves easier because you're not fighting the friction between the tarmac and the rubber in the same way.

2nd seems normal on every power steering car I've driven (if FULLY stopped)... but if it is excessive could be worth checking the power steering fluid level or something? The only thing it could be (if it is a problem at all) is the pump...
1st one could be literally anything probably clutch, pressure plate, bearing or if your really unlucky the gearbox. Someone else will know more about this than me I am sure. I would say that it is not the flywheel, as the noise stops when you press down the clutch, it is likely to be either the clutch or something between it and the gearbox.

thanks fellas, in not worried about the steering as it only does it stationary and does it in both directions. my mrs is a bit worried so I thought id ask. we have just come from a golf gttdi to a pug 1.4l so things are a little different.

Different? Like the pug has no power compared to the Golf? Jez, bit of a change that.

The power steering pump can be getting weak with time and hours of working,as mine is light in all cases,what wheel size you are running on yours?

Have had problems with both on GTI,firstly had a indefinable noise from clutch,gearbox area,this started as a whine/whistle causing poor gear selection.To rectify this I replaced the clutch assy.With regards to the steering fault the only issue I've encountered was noise,this due to pulley bearing failure,however at £25 and a 6 month warranty a cheap repair.Hope you find this useful.

kandlbarrett ....yeah there is a bit of a difference in power (golf 150bhp) but head decided to blow on it.
Timon2210....im running on on 14" steelies at the moment but want to put some alloys on it soon....
Maxwall....thanks for the advice . I'll keep an eye on it
