Hi on my 2005 1.4cc which is fitted with the VDO throttle body and no accelerator cable or TPS sensor is the cold start mechanism contained within the throttle body electronic box on the front which has a 6 pin plug socket wire.

What is the question?

There is no cold-start mechanism as such; the ECU decides, and moves the butterfly and injector timing accordingly.

Yeah I believe that what he meant to say,so the answer is to take it out,and clean the butterfly,as it might be stuck with oil and dirt over the years,which make it hard to response with the motor when activated.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for taking interest in my question, The exact problem is,

When started from cold its fine and the revs go up to about 1200rpm but as soon as I drive away and come to a junction or a tight corner and have to ease off the throttle the revs fall back to zero and the car obviously cuts out, which is dangerous No servo, power steering etc.
It starts fine again straight away but it continues doing the same thing until the engine gets warm then it is fine.

I have removed the throttle body from the car and properly cleaned the butterfly valve, it was not really very dirty anyway.
I was afraid to remove the black plastic cover on the front not knowing what I might find inside.

I have been reading various posts on here about this sort of issue and have up until now replaced with new pieces the,

MAP sensor in the inlet manifold chamber
Engine water temp sender (Thermostat housing)
Pre cat Lambda sensor.
This morning I removed and cleaned the battery earth strap.(Just hoping really)

My wife seems to thinks its worse when something electrical is switched on ie A/con, Fan heater, Heated rear screen etc,
I suppose she might have a point as its only started playing up now the weather is colder and damper? but maybe we did not notice it during the warmer weather when fans and things were not needed in the morning.

So that's really about it and that's why I was asking about the cold start mechanism, which is supposed to keeps the revs up until the engine is warm.

Any help/advice appreciated

Well I believe it's time for a new throttle body,since cleaning didn't helped,then the fault is internal,and since you don't have a throttle cable,If you got a diagnostic for your car,I would say you will find an error in the throttle resistance or anything related.

All the things you mentioned indicates that your throttle body is the problem,as it's the one responsible about keeping the RPM steady when engine is cold,and also make the RPM a bit higher when there is load such heater/AC,or headlights/Fog lights.

So replace it,and all will be good,but I believe if you fit a new one,there will be a pedal learning,and that have to be done by PP2000.

Those VDO units do not fail that easily bear in-mind..
They need to be very reliable for the job they do.

I have one spare from replacing on a 206 and it made absolutely no difference to the issue.

Since you are experiencing this mainly from cold, check engine temp and other sensors with PP2000 as Timon says.

Also there is various 'cut-out problem' threads which might or might not apply to you.

I would test the engine temp sensor.
There is often one for the gauge on your clocks and a seperate one for the ecu.
They should both read the same with a multimeter.

Plus worth checking the throttle position sensor.

Wd40 the inside of each electrical connector too just to make sure your getting a true connection.

Whats the map pressure when faulting?

At a stab in the blue i would try a donor throttle unit, as ive found these fail quite regulary on 1.6 16v's!

Also as V9977 said, check the engine temp when cold.

Hi All thanks for all the advice, still no further on with the issue.

Just after I bought the car I had the timing belt changed by a mechanic in his spare time.

I know its a long shot but is it possible the belt is one tooth out, if so would this give me the problems I'm experiencing.

Another factor I forgot to mention previously is that we don't think the car performs like a 1.4cc should, it seems sluggish when going up hills and is slow to pick up speed from stationery.

or does it still point towards the throttle body?
