Hi all, I have a 1.4 Hdi which was fitted with 175/65 R14 alloy wheels/tyres. In order to prevent the bad front end wet weather grip, I have just fitted a set of Nimrod alloys off a 206 cc. These are 205/45 R16, which have a near identical diameter to the old ones, but are obviously lower profile and wider.
The wheels do not foul on anything at all etc, however when driving, especially at low speed there is a sort of grinding noise coming from the front!....... Can anyone suggest what the issue is, and a way of solving it?

Dave

Think you need to get it on a jack and turn each front wheel by hand to see if you can re-produce the noise... Sounds like a weird one to me.

I've just fitted 16" nimrods to mine but changed all the tyres at the same time so I don't have any strange noise's.

I've seen some of the threads on this forum and they've suggested that it could point to the wrong type of tyres, try swapping some of the wheels round and see if it makes a difference. Also check the tyres for stones inbetween the treads.

have you fitted the right bolts for the wheels?
you have fitted wider wheels for better wet weather grip!!!!whos told you that?
you will be a lot better of with the narrow wheels.

Thanks for the replays, the wheels have good tyres on them, so haven't fitted new ones and I have jacked the fronts up and there is no noise when turned by hand and they spin freely...... I haven't had them balanced as yet, but there is no vibration only the rather disturbing noise?!

I have totally no idea what the issue is with these, but the noise is more than a little concerning! I have decided to chuck the old ones back on for the mo, and when I get the cambelt done in the next couple of weeks, the guy is going to have a look to see if he can sort it......

I can't see why the tyres would cause a grinding noise though to be honest, the noise is just like when brake pads have worn down to the metal (which is not the case)!

100% new tyres needed.

I bought second hand nims with tyres on. The tyres had loads of tread so left them on. I had a horrible noise at low speeds. Put four new tyres on. No more noise. One of the tyres was unevenly worn.

Your nimrods+tyres are wider, they might start touching the strut/springs.

See if there are any scratches on the inside of your front wheels

Might not be caught while jacked up, because well, it's jacked up! Smile

PS: Tolkienfan001 watch out in case one of your new tyres gets eaten Wink
