I'm having this exact problem! I've resigned myself to the fact it's gonna have to be a custom built one.

Shouldn't you remap after all the mods? Engine and exhaust anyway??

Not actually sure a special exhaust matters on a diesel ... in fact I think I read they can cause problems .... but I will stand to be corrected.
You don't get the "rorty" noise of a petrol ... and the 1.4 HDi cat is also a paarticulate filter I believe ... you could find you don't pass the emissions test. Since knocking ours out it seems to be a lot more smokey on acceleration ....
Don't forget all the MOT rules about cats has changed for petrol AND diesel ...

I think exhaust on a diesel for me anyway, is purely for aesthetic reasons. Mine has a big cut out and nothing to fill it.
As for Mot's. I thought the general opinion was as long as the physical cat shell was there, they wouldn't open the exhaust up to check surely?
To be honest, no eml light came on for me and i haven't noticed any more smoke than before. However I do know everybody's car is different and I might of just got lucky. The only time I see any smoke is if i've been driving smoothly for a while then boot it from v slow or standing.

so what your saying is decatting the 1.4 and any kind of exhaust system is not worth it? i risk failing the mot and i wont get the nice tone that im after as its a diesel?

I would say it's worth it, you do get more bottom end poke. I think with a straight through pipe there would be a bit of a noise. Nowhere near as nice or as loud as a petrol alternative, but I want it just for looks as it looks daft with nothing filling the huge gap. Thinking a nice rolled out oval.
I'm sure you'll easily find garages that will pass it, true places kwik fit might not, but you'd have to be daft to go there anyway. They fail them just to get the work to fix them.

so if i went for something along the lines of a cherry bomb and cleaned out the insides of the cat i would see an improvement? how loud are cherry bombs?

Thats all I did
Took cat off:
and smacked it out with hammer and screwdriver.
However as you can see its a big chamber, so a straight downpipe would be better for flow.

No, but any exhaust garage will easily have a straight pipe that will fit in the place of that, its a pretty standard diameter.
Cherry Bomb
This is made to order, and pretty good value to be fair.
I'd certainly consider it. Dunno what sound would be like though.

awesome, how hard would it be to insert a tube through the center of the cat so on the outside it still looks the same. i want to keep it looking as standard as possible. cheery bomb will be ordered as soon and i find out the diameters of the existing exhaust and the space i have available underneath
Unless anyone knows the size of the standard back bock on the 1.4hdi?

Why you need to do this? when you knock the centre out and its all connected back up it looks exactly the same as before. Only way to tell its a decat is by unbolting it again and removing it to look inside. No mot garage would do that.
