Hi, I'm £200 down so far at the local garage trying to fix my girlfriends 2001 206 hdi. We don't know now if we should cut our losses and scrap it or try to DIY repair. I've restored a classic car in the past so I'll be fine with mechanics and electrics circa 1955! but I have zero experience with modern car electrics / diagnostics.
The fault with the car was the central locking didn't work and the car wouldn't start. Also the indicators, windscreen wipers, rear window heater, and electric windows (I think) didn't work, but the dash lights all came on and other electrics worked. The AA came plugged in their laptop and said there was no response from the cars computer.
It turned out that the car could be started by disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes. Although sometimes the car would start but other electrics came back gradually whilst driving e.g indicators. Once working again it would be fine for a few days / weeks then fail again. Disconnecting the battery always got it running again each time, but now it won't start at all.
The car had leaked during the storms at the start of the year just before it broke, and water had got into the drivers footwell so we think the fuse box could have got wet or something, so we tried to dry the car out to see if that helped, it seemed to be getting better but then as mentioned above eventually gave up and now won't "reboot".
After trying to read up as much as I could online I think our last option might be to send the BSI off to be tested.
Does this sound like a good candidate for the problem or are we just throwing good money after bad? (It's now been sat for 6 months and run out of MOT)
One last question, if it is worth checking the BSI where is it on a 2001 206 HDI? I've looked behind the glovebox but there's nothing there and I can't see anything obvious under the steering wheel either. I've no idea where it's hiding! Does anybody know where it is?
Thanks for any advice...

Firstly welcome to the site.
The BSI is situated behind the panel under the steering wheel. I'm not sure if the car is plexed or non plexed as the change was October 2001. The radio stalk gives you an idea. Here's how to find the difference.
Certainly sounds like the BSI could be damaged. It's a common fault when electrical work is done on a 206 without disconnecting the battery.
I would PM Lee and see if he would be able to connect up to PP2000 and find a fault. His rates are a lot cheaper than the dealer and you'll get the honest answer and not just a throw everything at it answer that most garages give when they don't know what's wrong.

Thanks for the welcome, and the advice.
I think ours must be the non multiplexed version as the radio stalk looks different to that in the guide you linked to.

Likely water in the fuse box, or BSI. Try rebooting the BSI using the procedure here:

Multiplexed Electrical System
When disconnecting the battery to do electrics, or just to change it, you need to follow this guide. Failure to do this could result in a £600 bill from Peugeot!
* Put down the drivers window.
* Pop and Open the bonnet. Shut ALL DOORS apart from the bonnet.
* Leave the car for at least 3 minutes. This allows the BSI to shut down and go to "sleep."
* Disconnect the clamps on the battery, and change/do electrics/whatever you are planning to do.
* When reconnecting, reattach the clamps on the battery. Don't shut the bonnet yet. Leave the car for a few more minutes. This allows the car to settle.
* Lean through the drivers window, and turn the sidelights on. (Don't open the door.)
* This is called a "Soft Start" for the BSI.
* Let the car finish thinking about everything, and check all the systems etc.
* Start the car.
Non-plexed Electrical System
* You may need your radio code upon reconnection
* If your car has a Peugeot anti-theft alarm system, disable this
* Disconnect the negative terminal first
* Disconnect the positive terminal
* Complete intentions
* Now to re-connect, Connect the positive terminal first
* Connect the negative terminal
* Before starting the engine for the first time, turn on the ignition and wait for 10 seconds to initialise the various electronic control units
* Activate alarm system, if you have one

Did the garage check the earth strap from the battery to gearbox, (i presume he did and should have been the first port of call) maybe worth double checking.
