hi, peugeot 206cc 2004 53,000 miles owned it for 6 months, since buying the car i've never really given it any beans acceleration wise (trying my best to look after it) and now and then when i do it's never hard down to the floor, was just joining the motorway the other night going from about 30mph up to what would have been about 55-60mph but somewhere in between loss of power (chugging, stuttering) and clouds of white smoke out of exhaust, doesn't do it everytime because a few minutes later on a different road same again (foot down a bit) just to test it (speed up, slow down, speed up etc) about half a dozen times and it's fine, then it does it again randomly bits of smoke and the threat of loss of power so i have to ease off, if i'm really light on the accelerator (which is still good enough for normal everyday driving, albeit a little slow compared to what i see of other cars, but still a speed i'm happy with most times, it's fine, almost letting the car do the work for me) it drives like a roller then, can even go a little faster accelerating, but if it makes it more understandable i've lost all confidence in the car for say, overtaking, which sometimes you need to, foot down, and it's usually splutter, followed by the threat of loads of white smoke, not absolutely everytime, but enough that i'm not confident that it'll overtake anymore, took it to a mechanic when i first noticed this about 2 month ago, at first he thought it might be the head gasket left the car with him next day he rang said good news summut to do with the petrol i was putting in and i should put the more expensive unleaded in which i have done ever since, also, i think i've noticed compared to when i first bought the car, on tickover, there's a slight miss, quite quick and often, which i'm not sure i would have noticed when i bought it ?, other than that the car's a dream, i'm no mechanic but i'm starting to think slight cracks in gaskets and all sorts ? can anyone help ?

Well the white smoke means an oil burns in petrol engines,so you might have some faulty piston seals, which makes the oil get burnt in the chamber

Oil burn isn't usually white smoke.

Exhauste smoke colours are:-

White smoke is usually steam and suspect head gasket (can be due to first start and cold engine.)
Blue smoke is oil from ring / cylinder failure, valve stem seals or head gasket.
Black / grey smoke is usually excess fuel or fuel not fully burning.

The petrol theory sounds like a load of rubbish to be honest

White smoke /steam suggest water is getting in , take off the air intake system make sure the air filter isnt wet the missus had a similar problem on her 1.4s i found water in the air system ,The pipe which runs from inside the wing then down and back up into the air filter had come apart and was letting water in .

very similar symptoms to yours
