Keep topping it up with diesel to lower the petrol mix.

I once filled a 1.6 Focus with £50+ of petrol then drove from Okehampton (Devon) to Swindon. the car cut out when I pulled to a stop at J15 M4. drained petrol and refilled with diesel. The car was at about 30,000 miles when i did that and it was still going without problem at 140,000 miles.

Diesel cars vary on how well they cope with petrol but I think you should be OK.

Worse putting diesel in a petrol. My mate was putting mixed fuel in his car and it couldn't burn the diesel. it was forcing it past the rings into the block and it literally flooded the engine with diesel.

I put petrol on purpose in my 4x4's as its good for cleaning the injectors. But they are older direct injection engines which run on pretty much anything you care to put in them. I wouldn't do it on a common rail.

might as well throw in my 2p yeah it will be fine as you only put a tiny bit in and put loads of diesel in straight away. you'll be VERY unlucky to have any side effects.

When you do your service next make sure there's no metal in the fuel filter housing. I heard the lift pump doesn't like petrol much... but you'd be VERY unlucky in your scenario, plus that is probably just the usual internet bulls**t.

How did he manage that when the pump nozzle for diesel is bigger then the petrol nozzle hole...

I have always wondered that too, but its happened about 5 times on our petrol courtesy cars at work, forever having to recover them as people have put diesel in them

I did the same thing about 2 weeks ago in my 1.6 HDi. I put in £6 worth of petrol before realising, then topped up with diesel. Since then I've been topping up every few of days with around 10 litres of diesel to dilute it. I've now covered over 400 miles and it really hasn't made any difference. So I think you'll get away with it.

I was advised to add Forté diesel fuel additive which I did as soon as I could get some. Also I was told if the engine sounds noiser under hard acceleration then you might have a problem.

Common mistake,

We usually put diesel in instead of petrol over here. Smile
