Can anyone give me some advise into how hard the subframe is to remove. And will this give me access to remove the exhaust manifold? Any advise appreciated

use a mirror and a ratchet, Its not that hard to remove! its only 8 or 12 bolts!

The 138 manifold will just about squeeze out from above. If the 180 manifold will only come out from underneath it's not too difficult to lower the subframe.
There are 4 bolts holding it into the car. You'll need to disconnect the gear linkage too. and the lower engine mount. If you want to completely remove it then you're best taking the ball joints out of the front hubs too.. Take the wishbones with the subframe.

Thanks Edward, as long as i dont need to remove the engine to remove the exhaust manifold i'm happy. i can leave the drive shafts in the gear box cant i?
If i am taking the lower engine mount off do i need to support the engine? And i dont race i do plan to do the odd track day but usually just sit in traffic so is there anypoint upgrading bush?

Drive shafts stay and you don't need to support the engine. You'll have to undo the two nuts holding the steering rack on the sub frame too. You'll need to provide support for the rack with some timber or Axle stands.

Well if the rack doesn't go low enough just one bolt disconnects the steering column from the rack. That will allow plenty of room. Yes I've removed my subframe a couple of times.
There is also a bracket on the front of the subframe that holds the PAS pipes in place. That needs removing but it's a simple job.

You don't need to disconnect the hoses. Just lower the rack out of the way.
