Car refused to start today. Been a bit sluggish on turn-over on and off for couple of weeks and through battery was on way out, but suddenly today, turned key and just click and nothing.
Called out recovery who ran a battery health check and showed its fine. He said to try the key to show him what happening, and concluded its the starter motor jammed or failed. Managed to push start car to get going and drive home, so hoping local Factors will have one on the shelf tomorrow.
Firstly, are they serviceable at all or do we need a replacement? Also, how easy to remove/refit and any do's and don'ts please?
Car is a 52 reg 2.0HDi.

Probably just as cheap to get a replacement, i had one from euro car parts for mine a few weeks ago £46 inc vat. Very simple to change only things that have to come out the way are the air filter and fuel filter housings.

Thanks, just been looking on Eurocar Parts and mine is £70, but atleast they have one in stock.

It's only 3 allen bolts holding the starter motor in & a nut on each of the 2 wires that go to it. Fuel filter & air filter housing will just lift up and out the way. The only obstruction really is one of the 3 bolts holding the motor in will get caught up against the Clutch Slave Cylinder. But it's only 2 bolts that hold this in. Or you can struggle a little and just undo that bolt last whilst pulling the motor out slowly.

Make sure you disconnect the battery before you start working on it !

Thanks everyone.
Managed to get one this morning and hubby has now fitted. We took the top off the old one before we dropped it into the motor factors for exchange, and out of the 4 brushes, 3 had totally disappeared so wonder it was starting at all. New one is so quiet, old one must have been struggling for a while now, so good job done and failed at the right time when we had chance to do it and not on a work/school morning, so alls well that ends well, cheers all!
