Hi all.
one of the oil seals is leaking gearbox oil, its the one on the diff/transfer box? the shaft at the back of the engine.
been told i will need 2 seals replacing? and they have quoted me £100
is that a fair price? just seems expensive to me.
also is it reasonable to do your self? im handy with the spanners but ive never done any work on drive shafts etc before

It is reasonable to do yourself, may as well change the gearbox oil for fresh whilst you're there.
The seals will be about £15-£20 for both i'd imagine (been a while since i bought any!)
Quite a simple job tbh
-Car on stands, wheels off
-Drain gearbox oil
-Undo and remove hub nuts, lower arm balljoint nuts.
-Pop the balljoints out and remove the lower arms from the hubs.
-Pull the passenger side driveshaft out of the hub and then out of the gearbox
-Depending on which model you have the drivers side will have some kind of retainer set up for the intermediate bearing on the driveshaft, if you're handy with spanners like you say, you'll be able to see fairly easy what needs moving once you're under there.
-Once they are undone, remove the shaft the same way as the passenger side one.
-Remove old seals
-Clean area and fit new seals
-Put it all back together and put your nice fresh gearbox oil back in, then refit your wheels and enjoy!
Dont think i missed anything off the top of my head lol.

Hi mate thanks for that.
Its the shaft in the middle at the back of the engine. Will have have to remove both shafts?

I assume you are talking about the longer one (drivers side) which runs behind the engine due to the length.
You won't have to remove both if its only the one leaking but its one of those things which are better to replace in pairs whilst you're there in my opinion.

If its a driveshaft oil seal then normally about £10 + 1 hour labour (£40) per side. So the price sounds 'normal' to get both done but you could shop around. Also if one one needs doing then should be half price anyway.
As DanT listed, its fairly easy to do yourself.
Make sure you plan and YouTube how to seperate the lower ball joint before you even start or you will be swearing at it for hours

yeah im not sure why there trying to do both... if they where wishbones etc then fair enough but the other seal is fine...
