Hi guys,
As some of you may remember I had issues late last year with the cam belt skipping on my 180. Now to be honest after removing the head, sorting the valves and putting the car back together it still wouldn't start. It's been sitting on my drive since and now it's time to get it back on the road!
The reason for the non start I'm guessing is that it still has low compression on all cylinders (65-75psi) it was 0 psi before so it's getting there!
I'm hoping to do whatever is needed next weekend but after doing a bit of research on the net about my problems it seems one cause could be the vvt pulley? It seems uncommon but maybe the case, I'm thinking if it's stuck it could be holding the inlet valves open longer than needs be?
I would be very grateful if someone has a picture of a good pulley mine has just one centre bolt, so I can compare to see if mine is obviously faulty.
Also after looking around it seems that the info I have for timing the engine could be wrong. All the pins fit in snug so I'm hoping not but if someone has a pic of one timed up showing exactly where the pins align it would be a great help!
I still have not found a reason for the belt jumping either so any ideas why that happened would be a help too,

You could have timed the engine out, remove the injectors and use a screwdriver to see if you have the crank at tdc

On cylinder 1? I removed plugs before to check, all pistons are halfway down the bore when cams line up

I've got to admit I kinda jumped in there with that comment. I'm not sure how the 180 is suppose to be when locked it but I know the crank is very easy to turn when the belts off. All the cam belts I've done they needed to be locked at tdc to lock the cams. I'm sure someone with experience of this engine will help you more

Picture of mine when i was fitting new cambelt and waterpump etc, may help you to determine whether you're timing it up right. One thing i will say which i have come across, is that if you're using autodata? The timing for the gti 180 is wrong, you need to follow the procedure for the c4 vts. Anyway heres a picture which may help you.

Many years ago I had the same problem on a different car.All was set up correctly but would not start.
In the end we decided to tow it for a 'bump' start, and it worked.
Don't know wether this will help you but it certainly worked back then.
@ a guess probably needs a pressure build up ?

Provided you have a good battery 65-70psi is very low. I have seen cars start with compression that low but not with all four cylinders down there.
Something is obviously wrong. A teaspoon of oil in each plug hole and spin it over. Refit plugs and redo the compression test; if it changes significantly then it is a cylinder bore / ring problem. If there isn't any change then cam timing or valve problems.
Also I have NEVER seen an engine timed with cylinders half way down the bore it has always been NO1 at TDC on firing stroke though I don't know the process for this engine.

Thanks for the replies, I've been a mechanic for 10+ years now and have also never seen an engine timed without cylinder 1 or 4 being on tdc which made me question the timing on mine, but I DID follow the auto data for 206 180 which now I see maybe wrong! The timing does look similar to the pic posted in this thread tho. But you can spin the engine over by hand and on the starter and it will not lock up, I'm thinking inlet timing maybe slightly out.

Did you use the flywheel to time it? As the crank is free floating. Remove the bottom pulley and then you f****d if its not timed

The hole for the crank/flywheel pin is on the gearbox at the back near the driveshaft

From what I understand from working for ford when you say the crank is a floating crank it has some sort of toothed pulley over the crank shaft which moves freely untill bottom pulley is torqued. The crank was originally locked when we discovered the timing was out but it seems that the bottom pulley (only driven by serpentine belt) is removed with 4 bolts then the cam belt can be put on using a timing pin through the cross that is left and a hole in the block.......
